I'm back in Oz / Ik ben terug in Australia

Last weekend I was occupied with flying from Perth to Melbourne, where I could catch up with my family after more then one year. Needless to say this was a very good feeling. My missus joined in on the same flight with me and we flew from Melbourne to Hobart. The plane had some delays and once we arrived in Hobart there were no taxis left! Eventually we managed to find a minibus taxi that took us ...

1000 NM from Fremantle/1000NM van Fremantle

Not much happened over the last couple of days. We noticed the water colour changed from black to Azure blue, probably we have much more sunlight now. We are preparing for the Christmas dinner. We received the menu already and it"s looking fantastic. It"s very much seafood orientated with the main dish existing out of rock lobster with mango sauce. Of course we"ll have the oysters, ...

Somewhere in the indian ocean/Ergens in de indische oceaan

We are travelling at a steady speed of 10 knots. The sea is calm and it"s getting much warmer. Air temperature is already up to a sweltering 8 degrees. Sea temperature is up to 9 degrees. We are now at 43 degrees South. The sea is much calmer with waves peaking at two meters. This morning I went back to the engine room. For all the anoraks out there, here are some figures: Even at this slow s...

Williams Seamount/Williams Seamount

Last night we set our course due East and we had the swell pushing in the back. It was fantastic to be on the trawl deck and watching the waves slamming in the back of the ship. The stern of the ship went eight meters up and down all the time. It was impossible to stay dry under these conditions but that couldn"t bother me at all. The water is still very cold, only halve a degree. Around 8 PM...

McDonald Island/McDonald Island

Last night we left Heard Island and set course to McDonald Island which is about 30 NM to the West. As soon as we were out of the lee-side of Heard Island the wind picked up to about 40 knots and the swell became significant bigger. We were sailing against the flow and this caused some spectacular bow-splashes. The visibility became worse (Caused by the sea-spray) and when we arrived at McD...

Heard Island zoo/Heard Island dierentuin

We only managed to get one helicopter flight up in the air as the weather closed in around 10 AM. The video crew were able to take some very interesting footage of the island. From late morning all flights were cancelled but we could go on land by RIB. Heard Island is truly a special place. There are thousands of penguins, elephant seals, albatrosses, fur seals, etc. There are the remnants of an o...

Nearly there/We zijn er bijna

Despite the rough seas we are making good progress. At the moment of this writing we are 60 NM from Heard Island and we can already spot it on the radar! We had another briefing today and I will be part of a team of three. I am the team photographer and tomorrow we will have our own personal helicopter, the big twin-engine Sikorsky S76, to take us around the island. We will need to land on m...

800km to Heard Island/800km naar Heard Island

800 km to Heard Island / 800 km naar Heard eiland As expected, the sea is much rougher now. Last night around 1 AM we had the last ice floes to break through. The swell picked up almost immediately when we hit the open ocean. We are now at 59:46 South and 77:00 East and the air and water temperature are increasing. Air temp is -0.8 degrees C and water -0.6 C. Despite all the ice floes gone w...

Whales and leopard seals/Walvissen en zeeluipaarden

Last night I went to bed after midnight but around 2 AM I was rudely awaken by crunching ice. I looked outside the porthole and saw very thick ice around us. The ship was pushing through it and vibrated a lot.I put on my clothes and went outside on the bow. Apparently I was the only one around this time of day (Besides the shipmate of course). The sea-ice was very thick and sometimes it didn"...
