Making Your Premises Safe From Intruders

It's a regrettable fact of life that the possessions in your home may be seen as easy pickings for opportunistic thieves. Blame it on the economy, or whatever, but there are loads of thieves out there who believe that your home looks pretty inviting. In many cases a residence is selected because it appears easy to enter the property and escape quickly without being disturbed. Worse, there are actually some criminals who view every home as a venture; they're proud of their house-breaking ability. On the contrary, you, as the homeowner, can be deprived of everything you love and treasure. Fortunately, there are quite a few basic things you can do to minimize the likelihood of becoming a victim.

It may seem obvious that you require locks on your doors and windows, but exactly how secure are the ones in your home? First, make sure all your home's outer entry doors are secured with quality deadlocks, then find an expert to help secure all your windows as well as possible. You'll want to also consider how easy and quick it should be to set, in case you have to leave in a rush. The whole idea is just to make it as difficult as possible for intruders to break into your home. Once you feel confident about your home's safety measures, give some attention to how secure any outside sheds and/or garages may be. Thieves are generally partial to lawn and garden equipment, as well as certain other household items like bikes and electric tools of all kinds.

A more high dollar approach, though well worth the money, is a state-of-the-art, electronic home alarm system. Given a choice between a house using an obviously high quality system of alarms and one without, can there be any doubt which one a crook will choose? You may even set up what's known as a "monitored" alarm system. This just refers to the fact that there is actually an individual monitoring your alarm 24/7, ready to deal with whatever the nature of the incident. The measure of security you want for your house may depend on your budget and how much you need to protect but a further consideration for some people is the use of CCTV cameras.

Keeping burglars out of your home with an obvious, high quality alarm system is fine, but you also need to make it a whole lot harder for would-be crooks to ascertain exactly what valuables you have, and where they're kept. One of the ways you might do this is to know exactly what's visible to the outside world through your windows, and to remove your most valuable items from clear sight. Check to see if there's a good way you can make it harder for a prowler to get to the back of your house from the front. Incorporating security lights that light up the backyard when any intruder's motion is identified near your house is another fine idea. What crook wants a nice, brilliant light shining on him as he tries to break into your home?

Ultimately you will have to choose how many precautions you wish to take and by taking some of these simple security steps you can ensure you do not become an easy target.
