West Coast Story
8th Jun 2011 - 10th Jun 2011 - Paradise Again -Turks & Caicos
What Day Is It??

I honestly have lost track of the days - I have lost all concept of the days or hours and, apart from 9th (Jen's birthday), which was indelibly imprinted on my brain (I was counting down the seconds until I could call her), I have no idea of the day or date at all..... I think this is a good thing - my watch stopped (both faces!) a couple of weeks ago and I did not have time to get new batteries or have it fixed, so I do not have a way to tell the time and this is a luxury. Plus, I don't have my phone incessantly ringing, so I can go out without it for the first time in years. I have no way, or reason, to know what the time is, so I just happily go about my days here... My days do start early with the birds greeting the Dawn, and I tumble in to bed around 8:30pm - absolutely exhausted from the walking during the day. However, in between, it is anybody's guess as to the time. Jen and Chris and I have been chatting on the phone every day, especially with Jen's birthday coming up, so I feel connected with them (an important thing for me). I am unhappy about not being there for her birthday, but we all agree that it is important to get the US business done first, and then come home for a considerably longer time after that - though Jen and Chris are asking why I am coming home at all??? Over the past 2 days, the weather has improved somewhat - we have not had the torrential downpours, but we have not had brilliant sunshine either. Overcast, warm (in the late 80's), with occasional breaks of drizzle or sun - take your pick - my days have been guided by the weather. I took myself off to this Submarine Tour on Smith's Reef, thinking that even if it rained on the surface, it would be fine below. The owners are a NZ woman and her Kenyan husband, who retired to TCI 6 years ago, after finding the business on the internet to buy. They had never been here but were looking for something to retire from teaching. And this was what they found!! They have imported one of those really sturdy submarines from the Cairns tourist industry and take people out 3 times per day for an hour on the Reef. The rest of the time, theirs to soak up this wonderful place and to enjoy long periods with their grandchildren in holiday time. It is certainly unusual for people from our hemisphere to be here and we hit it off, with similar life stories and children settled all over the world. The trip underwater on the Reef was spectacular - we were lucky enough to see loads of turtles and even stingrays, plus the beautiful fish and spectacular coral!! Have you every heard of Brain Coral? It is yellow and truly bizarre as the name describes EXACTLY what it looks like. After our little underwater excursion, the husband dropped me at the supermarket to gather my food for dinner, and another quiet night at home. Around sunset, I was drawn back to the beach, and with a well-made gin and tonic in hand, I amused myself taking photos of the waves washing up on my feet, and endless attempts at catching a straight line of marker buoys in the surf. I am taken in my photos by images of symmetry or lines of things (umbrellas, buoys, boats, etc) and I am enjoying taking photos everywhere I go. Just need the sun to come out a bit more. Finally, having amused myself for over an hour, and the G&T gone, I returned to the apartment and settled in to watch my favourite show of the week - Top Chef Masters - but my little eyelids just could not stay open for even this. So, tumbled into bed with my sleep only interrupted by little bursts of ativity on the phone and internet to help Jen to organise a birthday dinner she is having with friends on Friday night - hopefully, a few little surprises to greet her when she gets there - you all know how much I love to organise those little things. Today, after a lovely morning reading and doing some more research for my proposed business in Australia, I headed out to Hemingway's for lunch. This is a popular place overlooking the beach - Mango Dacquiri and Jerk Chicken were the order of the day, leisurely consumed reading my book, at the tables set up on a deck overlooking the beach. Just what the doctor ordered!! Then, being brave (or remarkably stupid), I decided to walk back along the beach to my hotel. Let me just say that I arrived back home shortly before 5pm!!! A few times along the way, I was seen to be muttering to myself 'What were you thinking!!' Images of Laurence of Arabia-like scenes popped into my head as I battled my way along the sand. It was perfectly flat, however, my little legs did not take too kindly to even that. But I was determined, and stopped at beach chairs at each of the hotels along the way to rest and to read a few pages of my book or just to stare at the water, jumped into the water to cool down, and generally encouraged myself to keep on going. Probably not that long a walk really, but maybe 3 miles? I was beat when I got in and after an early dinner, dropped into bed at 8:30pm - another successful day in Paradise......
