On the Road again.
|
3rd March - Warrnambool, Gt Ocean Rd Still on the Great Ocean Rd. Weather very strange in Victoria. It peaked at 39 degrees last Weekend and then dropped down to 20 on Monday. The sun has been shining but it is very windy. We have stayed in the south west of Victoria as there is torrential rain in the east and north and lots of flooding. It has started raining here so we are going to visit a museum and have a swim later in the camp pool. We travelled slowly along the Great Ocean Rd and stopped at every lookout. We saw the 12 Apostles and some of the most amazing rock formations. Every time we turned round a bend my stock phrase was "I wasn't expecting that, it's amazing". Factoid - We spotted an echidna which is an egg laying mammal. (looks a bit like a porcupine) We visited Otway lighthouse and listened to the guides who are full of local knowledge and can tell tales for up to 20mins without taking a breath. We were there for 2 hours as we enjoyed the history and finding out about the many shipwrecks along this coast. We are using both paid and free camps. Have been in good camps with excellent facilities. The one we are in now has an ensuite bathroom and indoor swimming pool. However we prefer the free camps because we meet up with more long term travellers. We stopped at a free camp at a beautiful place called Johanna which had lots of fields and was next to a beach and met some great people all eager to share their experiences. We have met up with so many people now we are beginning to bump into people we know at various tourist locations. It's like King St on Sat afternoon. At Port Fairy Kev had his first draft Guinness. The town had so many Irish pubs it used to be known as Belfast. We went bird watching at dusk to see a colony of mutton birds return from the sea. It was very eerie as it got dark with 100s of birds swooping over us. It was like something out of a Hitchcock movie. We came to a bridge yesterday and kev wasn't sure if the van would go under so I had to climb up the bank at the side of the road to watch as he drove through. Luckily it made it! Phew!
