Corcovado and Beyond
7th Apr 2012 - 8th Apr 2012
Cusco

We arrived in Cusco at 4am and had to sleep in the TV room of our hostel until we could check-in in the morning. Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city on the continent and is filled to the brim with beautiful architectural buildings, narrow cobblestoned streets and locals trying to make money from the thousands of tourists who visit here. It’s the main starting point for those wishing to visit Machu Picchu. The lost city of the Incas is a day’s journey away by local transport, or you can choose one of the many trekking options available.

We spent 2 days exploring the city. It’s probably the most touristy place I’ve visited so far. There are people selling paintings, local handicrafts, tours and massages everywhere you look. I feel like while you’re walking down the street you’re just repeating ‘No, gracias’ over and over again!! Also, the shops here are definitely not geared towards poor backpackers. They have lots of posh looking boutiques and jewellers.

We decided to be tourists for a day and took the open top bus tour of the city. It was quite good as it saves you having to walk up the giant hills yourself. There is a giant statue of Christ here too. It’s a lot like Corcovado in Rio but much smaller. Again, it stands high over the city and the views are amazing.

We booked the Inca Jungle Trek and pick up was at 6am so we had an early night. The trek is for 4 days and includes white water rafting and zip-lining so it should be fun!
