Day 8 - Match day - Manly Marlins

Hi all,

The day dawned beautifully fine again, making the strole along the water-front to breakfast an absolute pleasure. The adults (coaches and supporters) were looking a little jaded this morning after a few final drinks for the day and some cards went on rather longer than expected last night. It should be noted that in the ultimate game of skill and ability - Craig won "chase the ace" from a large tabe of starters.

The boys all got together at Keily Park for the match today. The same ground as our Thursday night game due to the Manly oval being too wet - and possible cricket pitch damage. Again, the boys arrived in good spirits and seem to be having a wonderful time with their billets. Some have even been back to Luna Park.

The Under 12s played first today. The Marlins had a large squad and rotated their players frequently. This team came 3rd in the state championships this year and were just too good for us. Early in the 2nd half they had two yellow cards in the space of about a minute for dangerous tackles. Unfortunately the rules over here allow a substitiute player to be put on for the one sent off - so we didn't get a numbers advantage which could have given us a chance to put some points on.

The U11s were similarly outclassed today. The Marlins had very good backs. Some of these players also play league and they were good at running the ball up.

All credit to Manly for their convincing wins. Despite heavy losses, the coaching team were full of praise fo the heart and committment the boys showed. They never gave up and they never let their heads drop. Of particluar note for the U12s was Ben Ernst. He was courageous in defence cutting down players twice his size and typically elusive in attack. In the U11s Hamish similalry nshowed great courage for a little guy. Pilikimi and Reuben also had strong games. It has been a great source of pride in all of the games the boys have played that they have absolutely played with a passion for representing our club, our country, and themselves.

U12s Full time score: Marlins 34, HOBM nil. Half time score: 17 - nil.

U12s Full time score: Marlins 54, HOBM nil, Half time score 33 - nil.

The Marlins showed us great hospitality after the games at their home base and the kids have headed back for the final night with their billets. All parents, kids and supporters are also invited down to the Skiff- Club around dinner time.
