(Jour 30) Pornic to La Roche-sur-Yon

Over last night's dinner in Pornic, at an excellent and very lively restaurant, we were choosing today's destination when the French couples sitting at the tables on either side of us started to get involved in the discussion. They disagreed with each other about whether La Roche-sur-Yon was a desirable stopover. One couple claimed the town was "nothing" ("nul", "a hole") and the others recommended it. In the end we decided to go there because it was a good midpoint on our way to La Rochelle, but we didn't have high expectations. When we arrived we discovered that Napoleon had taken an interest in ithe city's development and there are many grand buildings and lovely wide tree lined streets in the old city.

Mature olive trees in a nursery by the road

This one is my favourite

Nearly a thousand years old

It is rich farming country

Department changes, so road number changes. Of course!

Mural on side of house

The numbers look familiar, but add 25% exchange rate

Recycling facilities in a supermarket

Napoleon in the centre of La Roche-sur-Yon

Another satisfying experience with cafe gourmand
