Tirrilstrip12
5th Aug 2012
Day 141

And it’s tipping down and rumbling with thunder. But are we complaining? No – because we got back from our day’s sightseeing just before it started (which was a bit of luck really because there was no rain forecast for today and we’d been into the city on the scooter). What I am complaining about though is we’re now confined to quarters having to watch Olympic water polo. None of your tennis final, or sailing, or cycling where we’re winning all these medals, but water polo. I guess it must be big in Hungary, but really, it’s just like watching basketball played in treacle, and with none of the skilful dribbly bits. (And I’m not wild about basketball!). Oh no – we’ve now moved on from polo to ….. synchronised swimming aaagggghhh. Where's the off switch?

Right - so – Budapest. Part 1. What a lovely city. Had an(other) early start today and took Tirril on the underground! The campsite is close to a stop and we were surprised to find that he is allowed on the underground as long as he wears a muzzle and has a (full price!) ticket. Once in the centre, we made our way to the river to catch the boat. There’s a good hop on/off ticket you can get that covers buses and the boat. Took the boat along to a large island which is essentially an enormous park – really nice, and Tirril was able to indulge in a bit of swimming in the river to cool down. Then it was the boat back, and onto the underground to get back to the van for lunch.

Only slight hiccup was when the ‘ticket police’ at the city centre station insisted that we had to carry Tirril on the escalator. Have you ever tried carrying a full grown Labrador down a moving escalator when a) he doesn’t want to be carried and b) there are loads of smirking spectators travelling in the opposite direction? Well we ended up grabbing two legs each and clung on tight although by the time we’d reached the bottom I think Tirril was getting to quite like this form of transport. He can think again.

This afternoon, we left Tirril on guard duty and scootered back in to do a bit of the hop on/off bus. Got the bus up to the old castle and then had a walk around the old part of Buda. There are lovely views of the river and some really nice buildings and streets to wander around. Then it was back on the bus to collect the scooter, and, other than an unscheduled trip back over the river courtesy of Budapest’s tricky one-way system, we got back just as the first rumbles of thunder started.

Budapest Part 2 tomorrow.

Malfunctions update:

Malfunctions? What malfunctions?
(Now there’s a bit of fate-tempting for you).
