Harry and Judy's RV Trip
8th Aug 2016 - Summer 2016
Day 75-August 8, 2016-Field of Dreams movie set and into Illinois

Day 75-August 8, 2016-Field Of Dreams movie set and into Illinois

Drove 204 miles in 5-3/4 hours.

Getting hotter, up to 86 and more humid

The way the ranger told us to go to avoid the gravel road was much better but probably a little longer.  Back on Route 20 east, more corn, corn, corn.  Another hawk flew in front of us today, this one from the left and a little too close for comfort.  We not only held our breath this time, we both jerked backward expecting him to hit the windshield but luckily he veered at the last minute.  We took a little side trip to Dyersville, IA, the site where they filmed the 1989 movie “Field Of Dreams”. We drove about 5 miles out of our way, some of it on gravel roads, and suddenly there it was…a baseball diamond right in the middle of the corn fields.  The original farm house is still there and now there is a souvenir shop in the parking lot.  A few people were hitting balls while we were there.  We had lunch in the cornfield, then continued back to route 20 on more dusty gravel roads through the town of Farley, “The Heart of the Cornbelt” and into Dubuque, the oldest city in Iowa, and busy, quite a large city.  Over the muddy Mississippi River and into Illinois.  Drove only ten more miles to our campground in Galena, IL which was also in the “Field Of Dreams” movie, substituting for Chisholm, MN. Nice grassy sites on rolling hills, heated pool, mini-golf, hayrides and movies on the week-ends, arcade, basketball court and rentable cabins. Took a while to get the RV parked, the inconsiderate people next to us parked in our drive so it was hard to navigate around a big tree, but Harry’s really good at parking the RV.  We set up, made a drink, pulled out the lawn chairs and read.  Harry got attacked by a hummingbird who wanted to check out his red hat.  Lots of flies here, too.  Not as many as yesterday, but still quite a few. There are a lot of RVs here permanently and people have fly paper hanging from trees and fly swatters on their tables.  Had dinner, walked around the campground.  There was a very early sunset, just a little after 8:00 and it wasn’t all that great.  Only here for one night, moving on tomorrow.
