Harry and Judy's RV Trip
27th Jul 2017 - Summer 2017 Part II
Day 22-July 27, 2017-To Kansas

Day 22-July 27, 2017-To Kansas

Drove 273 miles in 6 hours

Beautiful day-sunny and up to 84

Harry and I both got a big good-bye hug from Dan, the owner of the campground and I gave Foxy the dog a good-bye belly rub.

Still driving south on US 83 through over 100 miles of Sand Hills, grassy dunes that cover almost 20,000 square miles or over a quarter of the area of Nebraska.  Not much to see but grassy sand hills, every now and then a small herd of cattle, sometimes a small lake that looks out of place.  There is an old road that parallels the new one.  Sometimes it’s on the right and sometimes on the left.  Drove into Thedford, a small town with a fairgrounds and a couple of plaques describing the Sand Hills.  Then nothing again for miles.  Drove over the Dismal River, named because  the pioneers found it so difficult to cross they called it “dismal”.   The next town of any size was North Platte, where we stopped in a Wal-Mart for lunch.  North Platte, Buffalo Bill territory, a big city, the only one on our trip.  Around North Platte the terrain changed a bit, a bit greener, more ranches and farms.  The last town in Nebraska was McCook, another sleepy old western town with one main street and the usual farm supply stores.  Then we crossed the border into Kansas.  More and more corn fields and hayfields, less cows, really flat, not a hill in sight.  Very windy, too, we got blown around a bit.  The campground in Colby, KS is called Whistle Stop RV and Antiques and the office is an old house with room after room of antiques.  Met a couple at the site next to us and talked to them for a while.  They’re from Kansas City and are on their way to Colorado for a month trip. This is a nice campground to just sit and relax which is what we did.  Didn’t even unhook, we’re leaving again tomorrow.
