Salwa

Hi! Everyone,

‘My name is Salwa aged 19 years old and in form 4.The name of my school is called Lulu Girls’ High School situated in the South Coast of Mombasa at a place called Ukunda. Our school was established in the year 2007 and started as a mixed school, however it was later separated into girls and boys school after the school management built a separate girls’ school while the original school remained for the boys. We girls were only transferred to our new school buildings of the girls high school last year in 2017.

Our school has a student population of 103 girls with 11 teachers, each form has 1 stream making a total of 4 streams from form 1-4.Am so happy to have reached up to this level and now that am about to complete my secondary school, form 4 which am very thank full to my sponsors through Gail and Sara of the Mtomondoni sponsorship program. It is through this program which has taken me to this level of learning especially me being a girl.

Our school is a boarding school comprising of 4 large dormitories or houses namely Rain,Zambezi,Nile and Tana. Each dormitory is subdivided into 12 cubes, each cube is occupied by between 4-6 girls.

My school day begins very early in the morning as shown below;-

For the other days i.e…….Tuesdays and Thursdays……..class meetings whereby we all assemble with our class teachers to give out our views and concerns to the school management through our teachers for any kind problem in the school which we as students are encountering without our teachers’ knowledge or anything we as students would like the school management to do for us.

Wednesdays………House meetings, whereby we discuss matters related to the dormitories/houses. The issues discussed in the house meetings are electricity issues, leaking roofs. Electricity sockets problems and general house repairs.

                                    Mondays………..English and Kiswahili debates.

                                    Wednesdays…..religious services or worship.

4.45pm-5.00pm……..go back to our dormitories so as to wash and change from our school uniform to normal clothing.

5.00pm-6.30pm……..go back to our classes for revision classes.

6.30 pm-7.00pm…….evening super.

7.00pm-10.10pm…..general revision work. Officially we are supposed to go to sleep by 10.10 pm, however us being candidates (form 4) we sometimes exceed our night classes due to class group discussions. In our class we have set up special discussion groups on different subjects like Biology,Mathematics,Chemistry,Kiswahili and Physics whereby we discuss different subject challenges and work out on them. Due to such kind of group discussions we sometimes extend our night learning up to mid-night then go to sleep.

Our school menu is as follows;-

Monday……………….’githeri’ i.e corn maize cooked with beans for lunch while for super we have rice with beans.

Tuesday………………..rice with beef for lunch while for super it’s ‘ugali’ with vegetables like cabbages.
