Linda & Gerard's SA trip
Our caravan trip around SA. Having sold our business of 10 years -Big Blue Trucking- and our lives being on hold waiting for the decision from the Australian Government, we decided to buy a caravan and do an extended trip of South Africa. We found our caravan on Gumtree- a 2003 Jurgens Penta Gold which is number 11 of 150 made worldwide. It ended up that we bought it from a guy, Steve, whom we had known for years and whose daughter Kim went to school with. It had been garaged and well looked after and is in immaculate condition. The main tent had only been used once and it has a rally awning as well as an Easy awn that you just roll out. It has a double door fridge/freezer that is brand new-never been used- and a microwave. There is a wash hand basin and a sink and plenty of cupboard space and plug points. We added an oven/stove for outside use and a Porta Potti for those chilly evenings! Gerard found an 11 foot Achilles rubber duck at Boat-a Rama in Durban that had hardly been used and was identical to the one we had 25 years ago. He also found a 7.5 Suzuki motor on Gumtree that would be delivered to Midmar on Saturday evening. A bit of a gamble as we hadn’t seen it or tried it out. This rig would be perfect for our trip as the boat folds up and is easily assembled and carried by the two of us. Perfect for the lagoons and rivers in the Cape. Well, the motor started first pull and runs beautifully although it sounds like a lawnmower- and is the perfect engine for the boat. So, having stocked the caravan with food, wine and all the home comforts, we were ready to leave. We also bought an IPad which has proved invaluable whilst travelling to google information, places to stay, things to do etc. So with the IPad, IPod, 2 laptops, Printer/ 3G Modem, 2 cameras, Binoculars, GPS, cigarette-lighter adaptor with 3 charging ports, TV, DSTV decoder & satellite dish we were technically ready to depart.
