Les and Val's travels
20th May 2012
Zion canyon and Lake Powell

Hiked alongside the river in Zion canyon right down to where the path ends and you get your feet wet! The canyon is huge and very impressive and you have to watch out for flash floods in stormy weather but as it was about 90 degrees in the shade we didn't worry too much. Quite a lot of wildlife here, mule deer, loads of charming ground squirrels, geckos, and some of our party actually saw a 4ft long snake, turns out it wasn't poisonous thank goodness but this is rattlesnake country so eyes are peeled! Then on into Navajo country and Lake Powell ending up at Page. This is now desert scenery although still about 4000ft elevation, lots of sage brush scrub and spectacularly coloured cliffs of sandstone. We were lucky enough to be in exactly the right place too for the partial eclipse of the sun tonight which we saw through special glasses provided by the hotel.

Next: Monument valley, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas
Previous: Salt Lake City and Bryce canyon
