Becca & Byron's Big Adventure

Well, we've finally decided to step out of the rat race for a year and go and see the world. Its gonna be tough! We'll be away from the UK for about 10 months, travelling round the southern hemisphere - but don't worry we will try and keep you amused with our pics and stories from across the globe. You can see our (sort of) planned route by clicking on "Our Map" and if you want to keep in touch then leave us messages on the message board. Oh yes, and if you enter your email address in the box on the left hand side of this page you will be sent an email each time we post an update.

Penguins, fjords and Sky Sports

(Byron) Christmas has been and gone since our last update, and yes, we have seen snow. Admittedly it was in the distance, about 3,000m up a mountain, but even that's better than the drizzle we usually get at home. Actually, Christmas day itself was a little damp, but only in the morning, and every other day in the last week has been glorious sunshine (which may be something to do with the fact t...

Puzzles and Twizzles

(Becca) Well here we are again and I do believe we are now qualified as intrepid explorers after our day hike on the Franz Josef glacier. It was cool (well of course it was it's made of ice!) We donned our crampons, picked up our ice axes and (under duress from Byron) chose the hardest group to hike up and around the glacier for the best part of 8 hours. It was actually quite straight forward and ...

In-zid: Living in the 80's

(Byron) I've read it in a few places that being in NZ (that's pronounced "In-zid" with the delightful local accent) is like being in England in the eighties. Its once of the truest statements I've ever heard. Well, almost. Admittedly, they didn't have the internet in the eighties, but otherwise ... Walking through the capital city, Wellington, you see teenagers everywhere with dr...

Wayne, Mount Doom and Skydiving

(Becca) Hello Folks,Here we are again with the next exciting installment of our travels. New Zealand so far has been amazing and everyone says that the South Island is much more spectacular so we have a lot to look forward to. After flying into Auckland we collected Wayne. Wayne is our extremely expensive hire car who comes complete with tinted window shades and a graphic equaliser on the stereo. ...

A week in the Cannibal Isles

(Byron) So, Fiji. What can you say about it? Great beaches? Tick. Friendly people? Tick. Rugby mad? Tick. Its all there, and so much more. We had a week on the islands and had an absolutely fantastic time. In approximate chronological order, this is what we got up to .... Sandboarding. No safety briefings here, this is Fiji, not the west. Grab a polished surfboard, struggle up a hu...

Wombats, Pies and all things Big

(Becca) Well here we are again and nearing the end of our Australian adventure. Picking up from where Wombat Boy (aka Byron) left off we ventured out of Newcastle in search of his favourite animal. We managed to see them at a little wildlife park close by although they were in enclosures. We also met the stupidest peacock who got most confused when our peacock blue car was parked in his way!Ventur...

Isotonic pies and Sydney's strange musical fetish

(Byron) The Germans have The Hoff. Americans have country and western. The Scots have the bagpipes. It seems that many countries have unexplained musical tastes. In Australia (well, Sydney, to be fair to the rest of the country), they seem to love Phil Collins. I'm serious - his "music" gets played everywhere: in shopping malls, in cafes, on the radio - wherever you go in Sydney, i...

Tasmanian Adventures & a Beginners Guide to Aussie Wildlife

(Becca) Hello all, here we are again with the next exciting installment. I spent my final morning in Melbourne at the cinema, not any old cinema screening but a film which was dedicated "Senior Screen" - I was the only person in there who didn't have grey hair! Byron on the other hand went on a tour of the MCG which he'll tell you about later. We then cruised up the river like proper tou...

Mountains, The Ocean, Koalas and an Unfortunate Incident

(Becca) Well picking up where Byron left off we spent a lovely few days staying in the Adelaide Hills with Byron's friend Clive and family. This was largely spent tasting & drinking wine and entertaining 2 small children (not at the same time!) We also took a trip to the Haigh's factory (a famous Adelaide chocolate company) and managed to participate in one of their free tours. We tasted so mu...

The great Aussie BBQ myth (and some rocks)

(Byron) In the two weeks since our last posting, I think we have seen just about the full range of what Australia has to offer - from the weird to the wonderful, from the desert to the ocean. Alice Springs, where we left off, is a strange town of about 20,000 people stuck in the middle of a big fat desert. Originally built as a telegraph station to help Australia communicate with the outside ...
