Our Big Adventure...and more!

We originally set up this blog to record our 10-month round the world adventure in 2008/09. However, we've now decided to keep it active so we can keep a record of other travel ..... I have discovered that travel blogging is habit forming (as well as a useful record of what we have been getting up to!)

India (Part 3): Taj Mahal and a trip to the hills

Day 6 - Taj Mahal and a long drive The plan this morning was to get up early to see the sun rise over the Taj Mahal. However, early morning mist/smog meant that visibility was near-zero, so an extra hour in bed was a sensible conclusion. After a leisurely breakfast waiting for the sun to burn off the smog, we headed off to see the famous sight. Wow! No matter how much you read about it and how man...

India (Part 2): Jaipur & Dodgy Roads

Day 4 - Jaipur & The Amber Fort Today started with a traditional breakfast. Or, more accurately, was made up of a couple of traditional breakfasts from different parts of the world combined in a non traditional way. Porridge and pakoras. Yum. First stop today was the Palace of the Winds. This is a bizarre, almost 2-dimensional structure which is 5 stories high but extremely thin: it looks a bi...

India (Part 1): Delhi to Jaipur

Nearly a year after returning home from our round-the-world epic, we set off on a 2-week holiday to India. It was a package tour of sorts: we travelled with the Adventure Company, who we have used a few times before. This takes the hassle out of travelling to interesting places: they sort out travel, accommodation etc leaving us to sit back and enjoy the ride. As we are both busy at work, it"...

Home Sweet Home

(Becca) Well just as you thought it was all over I thought I would continue and write another entry, just to let you know what we have been up to since we got home. We have of course missed our family and friends so have spent lots of time trying to catch up with everyone. Apologies to those who we haven"t managed to see as yet but we will very soon.Next thing on the list was to satisfy the v...

A bit of culture and lots of memories

(Byron) And so from Brazil to our final destination: Madrid. Now after previous experiences of flying with Iberia (lost bags, scary trolley dollies and missed connections), I had expected the worst, but the flight was actually OK. Not exactly luxury, but we landed on time, all in one piece and with bags, so that was a bonus. We then had 3 days in Madrid to re-acclimatise to the northern hemisp...

Having a Ball in Rio!

(Becca) Hello All. Here we are again with the latest update from this amazing city. Carnival was fabulous and is very much recommended to anyone who loves a party. The evening at the Sambadrome was amazing and yes we did manage to stay up all night. In fact we arrived back at the hotel for breakfast and went to bed at 7-25am! The parades are just some of the most spectacular things you can imagine...

Budgie Smugglers and Dental Floss

(Byron) Welcome to Carnaval! We´re in Rio and the city is alive with the Samba beat. It's 30 degrees and sunny and there are street parties happening all over the place and people dressed up in weird and wonderful costumes. We are trying to shift our bodies onto a different time zone, as both tonight and Tuesday night we need to stay up until at least 6 am: we´re going to parties ...

Hot, hot, hot in Brazil

(Becca) Hello. Here we are again, now in Brazil and melting due to the intense heat and humidity. So following on from the last time we crossed over the border from Bolivia into Argentina and visited the city of Salta. Our plan here was to go paragliding but after a couple of enquiries we discovered than someone had died doing it a few weeks ago so decided to give it a miss and take the cable car ...

The Good News and the Bad

(Becca) We continued to enjoy La Paz and gradually got used to the altitude. We drove out to Tihuanacu to see the ruins of the ancient civilization who were around even before the Incas. We saw where they lived and worshipped and some of their amazing statues and carvings. On our return we discovered that our bag had been broken into (it was padlocked and in our locked hotel room!) 1500 US dol...

Hot, cold and breathless

(Byron) I write this form possibly one of the highest internet cafes in the world: we are currently in La Paz, altidude 3,600 - 4,000m (it's very hilly) and since arriving yesterday we have been slowly acclimatising to the lack of oxygen. The city is built in a valley, meaning that to get anywhere you have to go either up or down. You also have to be constantly alert for maniacal drivers and hu...
