Colleen's British Invasion
|
British (and world) History! Hi all, so today I went to the British Museum and the Tower of London. The British Museum is HUGE and full of so many artifacts the British have stolen from civilizations around the world. Highlights of the trip were the Rosetta Stone, the actual mummified body of Cleopatra, mummified animals (including cats, crocodiles, fish, and falcons), Assyrian lion hunt reliefs, and actual pieces from the Parthenon. The Parthenon frieze lines a room almost as big as a football field. There was so much more to see in the museum, but we wanted to make it to the Tower of London with enough time to see it thoroughly before it closed. The sidewalks roll up early in London, especially on Sundays. In the Tower of London we learned about the Roman history of the military stronghold, all the way to its use in WWII. The Queen even has rooms in the tower, so there are guards present. The history of torture and beheading in the tower was entertaining at the very least. Also in the compound are the Crown Jewels, which we had the opportunity to see! No pictures allowed though :( Queen Elizabeth II current crown is there, along with the crowns of her predecessors. their orbs and staffs, and coronation "tools" as well as the party dishes. The punch bowl is solid gold and big enough to hold 144 bottles of wine! From this point we could see the Tower Bridge, a medieval looking bridge often mistakenly called the London Bridge. For dinner we went for traditional British fare, me with fish and chips and Ashley with Shepherd's pie. We also had bread and butter pudding for dessert. Pictures to come soon. Cheers!
