This blog is now being redeveloped in far greater photographic detail, and has reached as far as Lhasa at:http://asiain90days.blogspot.com/                                               We left for Asia at the end of August 2006, traveling through Singapore, Thailand, India, Nepal, Tibet, China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand again and Malaysia. We have written our diary as far as Melacca, having traveled overland from India through Nepal to Tibet and China and then through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand.
Last Tango in Melacca...

We're holed up in an establishment just like home in the last destination of our Asia circuit - the Traveller's Lodge in Melacca. It has internet TV, a basic cafe serving breakfast and snacks and a self serve kitchen where we have just made a fruit salad of mango, dragon fruit, mandarin, apple, banana and lychees. It's situated just outside a ridiculous huge mall which could be in California with ...

Lost in the Clouds...

Got up today thinking we were going to take the 1.30 bus for Kuala Lumpur. This was itself something we had never intended to do till we got here as we hate big cities but in the process of being here we realized there are three ace cheap backpackers right outside the KL Puduraya bus station which means we can bed down and go for a saunter in China town and Little India KL style.

Anyway we de...

Into the Highlands in Fits and Starts...

Tonight we ended up in the Cameron Highlands in a series of strange cubic centimeters of chance neither of us expected.

We got up early caught a taxi to the ferry, raced on to the ferry pulling our massive trolley of luggage just in time to catch the next embarkation. Arrived in Butterworth and dragged on over to the chaotic bus station but found the 9.30 to Lumut (Pangkor Island) full and rat...

More Rabid Anecdotes from Malaysia...

We tried today to see if we could book an earlier flight back to New Zealand, but Singapore Airlines is fully booked on all of the days preceding the 25th, so we will have to move slowly down the Malay peninsula and beg for mercy if we arrive in Singapore a day or two early!

Today we started out well, riding the bike out to Air itam where there is a huge Buddhist temple with a pagoda overlooki...

Shooting through to Penang in One Easy Bite...

Had a great trip, if a bit tiring, through to Penang in Malaysia direct from Krabi. So now we are just a couple of bus rides away from Singapore unless we do something very rash, like flying to Bali and back on a cheap internet ticket to use up the missing days. However we are now stranded in Penang until the 16th so Christine can have her next rabies injection.

We decided to take the Green ...

Krabi Cliffhangers...

Had a great day today. Took a longtail boat out to Rai Lei an isolated set of twin beaches accessible only by boat with lush 100 ft limestone cliffs, crawling with abseilers hanging like ants on the cliff face, a white sand beach on one side, a bunch of restaurants and ridiculously expensive guest houses and a unique cave to an Indian Princess with extraordinary powers to whom the fishermen offer...

Phuket, Thai traffic and Krabi markets...

We drove around the south of Phuket Island yesterday. Phuket is renowned for the number of motorbike accidents (1000 killed or injured a year) and we quickly found the situation perilous for those who don't know how to drive in Thailand. I have learned to interpret the complex traffic signalling system so I seem to have avoided the 500 Bt spot fines for a variety of insidious or unreal offenses....

Mayhem through Bangkok to Phuket...

We made it to Phuket today after a mad day in Bangkok yesterday.

We left Chiang Mai the night before last, racing to the station in a tuk-tuk after spending most of the day setting up a blog report on the scam bus incident. Christine was mad when she connected with the fact that the greenstone pendants Rohan and Lorien had given us as good luck charms had gone as well, so wanted to put in a p...

This post covers the events in Northern Thailand over the last few days.

2nd Nov: Things have got even more exciting. Christine got bitten by a dog in a temple today and has had to have massive multiple shots of immunoglobulin and rabies vaccine in case it is rabid although the monks claimed it had be compulsorily vaccinated a couple of months ago by the government and it didn't look that exci...

Scam Bus to Bangkok...

We made it across the border to Thailand with a variety of troubles. Firstly the through tourist bus we booked turned out to be an overloaded Cambodian public bus to Poipet the border town. It nearly took of without us and I had to shout at the tout to properly lock the luggage compartment because it had only on latch working.

The bus raced to Sisaphon and then hit the horrendously rough road ...
