Fr Tom and Philip's pilgrimage
11th Jul 2012
Radicofani to Aquapendente

I'm not sure if you got the second part of yesterday's blog - because we've had no internet on the phone for 3 days. But we had a great meal at the hostel with about 19 people. Numbers of pilgrims have swelled dramatically because lots of people start the Via Francigena from around Siena - or even closer to Rome. This can cause problems getting a bed in the hostels. But the one last night managed very well. It is run by a team of volunteers who belong to an association founded to give support to pilgrims.

Before the meal we had a short service of washing the feet - a bit like on Maundy Thursday. A few people were a little reluctant, but they were soon won over, especially as they started with the children, & that sort of broke the ice.
The walking today has been brilliant, except that a fair few people decided to get up really early - about 4.30, We were all out of the place by 7am.
There were lots of opportunities for misty pictures. Eventually we caught the family with the donkey - 3 children in the cart & mum & dad leading & pushing.

They seemed happy.

Every day lately seems to end with a hill- as all the towns are on hills, & you always enter them through an archway.
We're now out of Tuscany.
Hot 34km

Next: Aquapendente to Bolsena
Previous: San Quirico d'Orcia to Radicofani
