Fr Tom and Philip's pilgrimage
14th Jul 2012
Bolsena to Viterbo

We were up too early for the hotel breakfast, so Caroline walked with us into town where we had our usual carbohydrate overdose.
The walking was good, with a little breeze which muted the ferocity of the sun.
The historic town of Montefiascone, on route, was a convenient watering hole, & the second half of the day was largely on dusty white tracks - very hot. We spotted donkey tracks in the dust & shortly came across the young French family I've talked about before. They hope to arrive in Rome the 22nd or 23rd. It's amazing how they can manage a donkey, a cart & 3 young children - on these tracks & with this weather.

By the time we got to the outskirts of Viterbo we were really looking forward to our fizzy water - but since we left Tuscany it isn't the same mind-blowing product it should be. It's now described as 'naturally effervescent' & 'with a subtle flavour' - we'll be hunting the real thing tomorrow.
We couldn't raise the priest here on the phone, so just had to turn up. The 4 Italians we thought were ahead of us had bagged the beds so we luckily found rooms in a nearby retreat house run by sisters. It's a bit dearer than a hostel, but it does include breakfast.
