Fr Tom and Philip's pilgrimage
15th Jul 2012
Viterbo to Capranica

Last night there was a major cultural event going on in the old part of the town + the eating prices were silly, so we launched out for the other side of town. This had two effects. Firstly, the restaurant we found had a fixed price menu, but it was a bad decision to go there. The owner was drunk & spent most of the evening slumped over a chair, asleep. The meal was edible but uninspired & the wine was anybody's guess. Secondly, when we returned to the digs it was dark & the old part of town is really complex (& by now crowded). So it tested all our skills of navigation just to get to bed. But we beat the curfew!

We got away a little late today, & stopped in Vetralla en route for some watering.
The afternoon was largely spent in hazel nut groves - makes a change from olives or vines.
We saw some birds I didn't recognise. I think they're some sort of flycatcher from their behaviour - but they had white throats, so that might make them identifiable.
As we got near the place we're staying we saw a man slapping a woman around. Philip gave him a mouthful, in English, but I don't think it did much good, because we heard the fight break out again as we started to climb the hill.
