Change of plans

So, I finally went and did it. I made up my mind. When I left Sweden I set out to go around the world without flying. Instead I was going to use cargo ships to cross the oceans. That was the main aim of this trip. But when I got to Africa, for many reasons, I started thinking about skipping the no flying part. Some of the main reasons was that if I kept to the original plan I wouldn’t have enough time in Africa, I would also arrive in South America in the middle of their winter, and I would have to book the ticket from South Africa very far in advance to get on the boat.

Instead I’ve decided to change the scope of the trip to be all continents (except Antarctica), with as little flying as possible. So now the plan is that I will go from Africa to North America. When I arrive in North America I will spend about 2 months visiting friends. I will arrive in New York City and go up to Boston, then head over to Edmonton and Vancouver before going down the coast to Mexico. From there I continue down to Ushuaia in Argentina before heading north again, back to Panama to try to get on a boat to Australia. After a short stay in Australia I’ll move north to South East Asia and India and finally go through Central Asia and the Middle East on the way home.

I have booked my flights to leave Africa from Johannesburg on the 19th of August. On the way to New York I will stay 3 days in London where I’ll meet my parents. But before that I have a lot of things still to do in Africa. Although also here the plan has been changed a little bit. If I can find a way I will try to go to Madagascar by boat, maybe stopping on the Comoros Islands on the way. If I can’t then I’ll go across to Namibia instead.

Off course this is all liable to change at short notice. I have been known to change my mind every now and then. In fact, I will be very surprised if I stick to this plan the whole way.
