Day 2 - Annecy to Bormio

The first thing we had to do was drive down the mountain from our hotel to the meeting point outside of Annecy and after ten minutes of driving our brakes were already burning. Again we set off at 9am - for Bormio - after picking up our challenge for the day. Our main priority was the possibility of the car overheating so we didnt focus too much on the challenge (which was to take pictures of things we found along the way that matched the pictures on the challenge sheet. We made our way to the Swiss border where we had to but a Vignette to allow us to drive on the motorway there and then made our way around Lake Geneva, through Geneva itself, Lausanne, Montreux, Vevey and then up the valley to Brig which is where the Simplon Pass starts. The first climb up the mountain already had the Carlton struggling. it is a big car with only a 1.8 engine, with 4 not so slim blokes in it with their luggage and a full tank of petrol! Almost as soon as we started up the mountain we pulled over in a rest-stop where we found about 5 other teams with their bonnets up! We took a few pics and then continued up the road which wasn`t as bad as we originally feared. The road down from the summit was fairly straightforward too and before long we were crossing the border into Italy. Admittedly, the brakes were a little warm but nothing too bad. At this point we had 2 other teams for company (the Sunny and the 1.1 Fiesta) so we made our merry way through Domodossola and towards Milan. Just outside Milan Andy stopped driving and Matt took over for the remainder of the day through Como, Lecco and up towards Sondrio and Bormio alongside one of the lakes and a ridiculous amount of road tunnels! We might as well have been driving at night time. As we were driving through Sondrio, we almost drove into the back of a car waiting to turn left but apart from that, the drive was fairly uneventful (despite it taking nearly 10 hours). We arrived at the Villa Rina hotel at around 7pm and went out for a Pizza in the sleepy mountain town of Bormio where nothing seems to go on, even on a Saturday night. The bathroom door slammed shut on Andy`s head so he wasn`t up for doing much with a lump on his temple which was lucky really as there wasn`t much to do!
