Day 4 - Salzburg to Prague

The only person who didnt wake up after 5 hours sleep with a steaming hangover was Damian - who doesnt drive! We had decided the previous day that we would go to the British consulate in Salzburg to sort our his passport problem and then make our way on the relatively short drive to Prague. Who would have thought that having no passport would be such a problem...? The consulate was closed for 2 weeks as from the 4th and a phone number on the door stated a phone number which Damian rang to be told that he would have to go to Vienna to get it all sorted. So, we all decided to drive to Vienna and then through Bratislava on up to Prague. We spent an hour or so working our way to the A1 motorway which would take us to Vienna due to a bus crash which we were unfortunate to have to drive past and witness a dead body lying in the road. As we got past this Damian said that he would stay in Salzburg, get a hotel and arrange for his passport to be sent to him and all he would have to do is book a flight from Salzburg back to the UK. After much deliberation, we left Damian in a little guest-house and made our way to Prague, now as a team of three. The Motorway was so quiet it was almost exclusive to us, which was lucky given our headaches (not that Matt and Jamie would know as they were sleeping most of the way). Due to the accident that we were caught up in we were about 90 minutes behind the rest of the teams so you can imagine our surprsise when after driving thorugh Linz towards the Czech border our Walkie Talkies started picking up some of the other teams. The border control were not letting any teams through and even turning some back if their paperwork wasnt completely in order. We had to try and get through the border and rightly enough we were directed into a holding area where they scrutinised our passports, paperwork and even VIN number on the chassis. One by one, the teams were allowed on their way (with the exception of about 10 who were turned back and had to leave their cars to get trains or find a different border crossing to get through). We managed to get through ok and then spent the remainder of the journey in a convoy of 4 cars through little old Czech towns towards Prague. The car was concerning us with 100kms left to go as oil had started leaking from the gasket, the wheel bearings were on their way out, the brakes were a little spongey and the radiator was at its usual high level. Anyway, the Carlton did us proud and we cruised into Prague at around 5pm, found our hostel, parked the car and made our way to the Staromacek restaurant for the final evening meal and prize presentations. We did not win any prizes but we did what we intended to do... get to Prague in a car that cost us 100 pounds and the only tool we used all weekend was a newspaper to unscrew the radiator cap! All in all, from the M32 motorway to Prague, we travelled 1790 miles and whilst not all of the team got there, the Carlton somehow did!
