7th Oct 2006 - 12th Oct 2006Fiji - mossies, rain and dog attacks! Heyo, Well my time in Fiji was pap! It was cloudy and rainy everyday of my trip, I was eaten alive by mosquitos despite tropical strength repellant and the staff in my hostel were less than friendly! My first day I sat by the pool (before the rain) and read my book, I think I might have caught a little sun depsite the clouds! I also booked a trip out to Nananu-I-Ra island. No I didnt go to Bounty Island (aka Celebrity Love Island) or Castaway Island, they wanted around $80 a night to stay in a 20-bed dorm, I dont think so!! Nananu is $25 a night for a 4 bed dorm. No mossies yet... The next day I was up and off to Nananu-I-Ra island. It was a 2 hour bus ride to the north of the island, and Im sure my bus driver was suicidal!! I gripped the seat so many times Im sure I must have left nail marks!! He also kept stopping to get himself breakfast and lunch, grab some hostel supplies, give a lift to a friend and I was just sat there, the only one in the bus while he did all this! When I got to the island though I was happy, it was gorgeous even in the clouds and rain. There were hammocks between palm trees on the beach, little deck chairs, a beach volleyball court and the staff were soo nice! Of course later that night I couldnt wait to get out of there!! I was being eaten alive, by either mossies or bed bugs!! I think both!! I had so many bites it looked like I had chicken pocks or something!! I was covered in insect repellant and I still got bitten!! Nevermind that the rain started in that night on my tin roof and made the mossies worse!! Argh!! I survived through one night and left! I wasnt going to be eaten alive for another day and night, and it was still chucking it down so I wasnt too happy to be there anymore! So back to Nadi I went - a dump by the way, if you go to Fiji dont stay in Nadi for too long! I had another day before I went to LA so I just hung about the hostel again, went for a tentative walk on the beach - a girl from Bermuda (also called Sarah) had been attacked by about 6 dogs the day before and had some awful bite marks on her legs. It actually got out a bit sunny on my last afternoon in Fiji, but all my stuff was packed in my backpack so I couldnt go out and enjoy it! My flight to LA was good, overnight and back in time, but I managed to sleep about 3 hours of it and wasnt in too much pain..... So bye bye Fiji (and the bizillion mossies) and hello LA! Sarah xx
