A Bit Fishy!!! After arriving back on Tuesday 10th it was back into things here again. I began to unpack my things (including a few treats from Nairobi) and get myself sorted for the next few weeks here. My room is most definitely multi purpose and works as a bedroom, office and pantry. I’ve now got a desk which is very exciting - not to mention useful!! During the day I work down in the SCCP office but it’s good to have somewhere to catch up on other project and admin stuff in the evenings. As predicted its hot, and getting hotter it seems. Despite this in the last three days we’ve managed to make a good start on the accounts as well as catching up on other aspects of the orphan project. Rodney (the new project person) has been assisting me with the accounts, and as we go I’m teaching him how to use the QB accounting software that we use in the project. To date this has gone well and it’s been encouraging to see just how much easier things are now that there are some good financial processes in place and the database is functioning well. This is great as there have been many hours spent getting things even to this stage so am encouraged that at least some of that is now starting to pay off. Other aspects of the project are going along well too including the distribution of the Hope Boxes and mozzy nets recently received from the US. Right now every orphan has received a Hope Box and a mozzy net with each guardian family getting a large mosquito net that protects 2 or 3 people. Apparently the District Commissioner came to kick off the distribution proceedings with a policeman in attendance and proceeded to inform the guardians about the consequences of using mosquito nets for fishing!!! Imprisonment awaits those who do this!! It was reported though that he did concede in private that the nets would in fact make very fine nets for fishing!!!! He warned the people that if they used these treated nets for fishing then the fish in the lake would be poisoned and that would be the end of their livelihoods. A rather fishy story I think!!!
