Barbados or Bust

Steve has been surfing in Barbados for over 30 years, and has always dreamed of visiting in his own boat. So here we are. We had a great sail from Tobago and tied up in a really nice marina, since we knew we'd be running around the island alot. Barados is the furthest east island in the Caribbean and made of limestone, not volcanic, like the other islands. The east coast is raw with great surfing. The west coast is beautiful with great offshore reefs. Here's a few pcitures from our first few days here. We'll add some more in the next few days.

Mount Gay
Our first stop in Barbados was the Mount Gay Distillery! Rum was first developed in Barbados and they sure do a great job. Of course there was tasting after the tour! While driving around the more remote areas of the island, we came across the other facility that makes the molasses and distillant, so we managed to get a private tour there also!

Hitch Hiker!
We had a great sail from Tobago. It's about 120 miles and took us about 22 hours overnight. Barbados is usually a hard trip because it is so far east and guess what - the winds come from the east! Just before dark this little bird landed on board and stayed with us for the whole trip. We knew he was tired because we were at least 70 miles from any land. Hope he was planning to go to Barbados!

Right of Way!
We only saw two other ships on this crossing. One was a Shell tanker and we radio'd them to keep up the good work - Steve's future pension of course! The other was this giant cruise ship. Since we were under sail, we have the right of way! How's this for a great picture!

Old Friends!
Steve has been coming to Barbados to surf since the early 70's. So he was really excited about seeing some old surfing friends. Great guys with names like Snake, Seacat, and King!

Snake
1st day in Barbados Steve joined an old friend to surf the famous Soup Bowl. Here's Snake cutin' back on Steve's "Surfboards Hawaii" board.

Soup Bowl
Steve catching some waves at a break called Soup Bowl. After 30 years we finally learned the origin of the break's name! The early surfers spent alot of time wiping out. Their heads bobing in the water looked like a pot of cooking soup with vegetables.

Animal Flower Cave
On the northeast coast of Barbados there are caves carved by the ocean. This one is called Animal Flower because the little pools inside have some little feather dusters in them. You can reallly see the power of the ocean here, there is nothing but the Atlantic to the east!
