The United States of America!!!

What a terrible way to be welcomed into America...my camera was stolen right out of my bag!!! :0( And to make matters worse, it was done between coming off the plane (when I took a pic of it) and walking out the airport doors.
Needless to say it was devastating for both of us, we have lost 6 weeks worth of really good pics...of climbing the glacier, milking Daisy the cow, ALL of Fiji and a lot more, it really is the SHITTIEST thing that could have happened!

So that experience put us on a real downer! We only had one day to spend in LA (Hollywood) and instead we had to spend money to trek back to the airport the day after arriving in the hope that someone had handed it in, well they hadn`t :0(
L.A just seemed to us to be a tourist trap, but the whole camera thing bummed us out. Oh, and when we went to use Andy`s camera we noticed that it wasn`t working - so now we`re having to use Kodak Disposable cameras...great!
But while we were there in L.A we wandered down Hollywood Boulevard and saw the stars handprints and all that, but all in all it seemed quite lame.

So we caught the overnight Greyhound Bus to San Francisco which is soooooo much nicer, it really looks like how it does on films. There are steep streets everywhere and trams and electric trains, and they still have their Xmas decorations up which gives the place a really festive atmosphere.

We`re staying in a hotel called the Dakota which is affiliated with the Adelaide hostel over the road. Our room is wicked actually, we are on the 6th floor and have our own bathroom with a bath, and cable TV. And the building has one of those really old elevators where you have to slide the cage accross...it`s wicked! We also get a free breakfast each morning which is great, free bagels, free toast, free Tea & coffee...savage!!!
So we`ve been out exploring the city - there are loads of really cool shops, lovely restaurants and cool little coffee shops. So we`ve spent a few days milling about and done a couple of touristy things.

We walked to the Golden Gate bridge and chilled out around there for a while, watching people walking their dogs on the beach.
Then a few days later we went to Alcatraz, the notorious prison situated on an island a mile out from the city. ALcatraz was really cool, we got the boat over, listened to the ranger tell some stories and then we did an audio tour of the prison outlining all the goings-on of the place. During our tour, we were allowed to enter one of the isolation cells, and then the mock guard closes the door for about a minute...and it is pitch black, it`s pretty scary really, but good to see how it would have felt.

We`ve had a few really nice meals and a couple in some real typical American diners which has been cool.

On New Years, we went to an Irish bar called Foleys which was good cos we got there before 9 and didn`t have to pay $20 each. There was a cool band playing and the place got really busy. There were free party hats, and garlands and all manner of New Years things...so we had everything that we needed. We had enough money (just about) to get a little merry, and so we had a cool night and had a bit of a boogy which was great.

The next update that I do will prob be when we`re back in the UK, I CAN`T BELIEVE WE`LL BE HOME SOON...IT`S CRAZY!!!!

Anyways, speak soon.
