Jam n Cam in Vientiane
|
Weekend at last By Cam __________ This week felt extraordinarily long to both Jamie and I for some reason. It was also a week of small disappointments - Jamie wasn`t selected as Tango`s voice and I wasn`t selected as English teacher at the U.S. Embassy. We weren`t particularly phased about these things, though. The U.S. Embassy job paid surprisingly poorly considering it`s a government job - I guess Bush must have used up all their spare cash in Iraq. The folks at Tango making decisions speak terrible English and therefore don`t know how it`s supposed to sound! They appear to have chosen a blonde-haired German over the native speaking Jamie (perhaps because of her asian appearance). I`m sure Tango customers will be delighted to hear "Sorry, das service ist nicht available!" On Friday night Jamie and I went out with our usual clique. I finished up tutoring Stella, my Korean student and met up with everyone at the beer garden that we dub `Phillip`s Clinic`. After a few beers we said goodbye to Christine and Michel after Christine bashed her head on a brick wall (accidently) and they had to go home. The rest of us made our way over to La Terrace, a French restaraunt with quite possibly the finest food in Vientiane. On Friday afternoon I`d taken the bike in for a service at my usual mechanic. They did a good job, however one of the apprentices had fiddled with the back wheel. As a result the chain was not in the correct place and it snapped. Luckily our Lao friend Pa (the P.E. teaching assistant) had come along with us and he helped me get the bike to his place. Motorbikes break down frequently in Vientiane and it`s a common sight to see two bikes cruising along with the driver on the left hanging on to the right-hand motoribike with his foot. Jamie hopped on Kim & Phillip`s bike whilst I put our bike into Neutral and Pa held onto it from his bike with his foot. Using this method he got us safely to his place where we left the bike. I then got on his bike and we drove to La Terrace where we had an excellent dinner and a few more drinks. We then all went home for bed. Jamie an I shared a tuk-tuk with Ginny and Ed. Saturday was pretty uneventful. We went to the Chinese market as we often do on weekends and bought some new DVDs. We also bought series 1 of LOST. We got the idea from Kim and Phillip who bought a few series` of `the sopranos` - they liked the idea of having a serial to come home to after work. We decided to do the same thing with LOST and when we`re all done we can swap them. We watched `the devil wears prada` before bed.
