We set >off from Zebrabar in >a convoy of 29 cars however worn track rod ends on the Beetle meant that we >couldn`t travel faster than 60kph without severe juddering in the front >end. >The customs escort gave up waiting for us and left us to >fend for ourselves. We were joined by 2 Norwegian guys in a blacked out Volvo with no lights and 2 teenage lads from sussex in an enormous grey landrover. With the Beetle unable to go over 60kph and having to stop for repairs on the Volvo we arrived at the Senegal/Gambia border several hours >after the convoy. They had missed the last ferry from Barra to >Banjul. Barra is such a friendly, hassle free place that the border police >decided we should stay the night in their compound - for our own safety! We >are grateful to them for that, the following morning we had to wait 3 hours >for the ferry and although the hassle in the ferry cue was mostly good >natured it`s constant and becomes VERY wearing.
