Mamallapuram

We decided to go to Mamallapuram and have a look around. All three of us caught one Rickshaw to the bus station, it was quite a squeeze, and caught a bus 2 hours south of Chennai. The bus was very crowded, there were people hanging out of the door!

When we arrived we wanted to find a place to stay, we looked at some rooms and managed to find two doubles for 450, great rooms very clean with decent bathrooms. The two main attractions are Mamallapuram are the Shore temple and the `Five Rathas` so we went to check them out.

The entry fees were pretty ridiculous 10R for Indians, and 250R for tourists. We paid thinking it was going to be pretty good but, it was pretty average. It was very old, about 1300 years, but not as intricate as some of the other temples i have seen. it was still good to stretch our legs. The other thing that surprised me about this area were the number of tourists i could see, all the previous days combined i would not have seen more than 25 white people, but here there were busloads of tourists.

We decided to go for a swim at the beach, so we went along and had a bit of a body surf for about an hour. we were pretty much the only people swimming but it was great to get my hair wet. Later that night we went out for a few drinks and some food, it ended up being quite a late night :)
