Mumbai!

Well i woke up with a slight headache in Mamallapuram about 2 hours late. I needed to get on a flight at 2:15 and it was 10am with buses leaving every hour. I managed to get ready and get the next bus which was great, but i missed breakfast and was pretty hungry. I managed to get off the bus early closer to the airport, and caught a rickshaw to the terminal. The flight was great.

I arrived in Mumbai at 4pm and went to an Area called Colabra which is the main area for tourists and night life. We booked into a hotel into a triple room and went to get some dinner.

The next day we decided to go for a walk and check out the town. we must have walked about 15km around the city and saw some amazing sights. The architecture is great, there are real Victorian influences from the British and a lot of Art Deco buildings around.

That day was a dry day so we decided to see a movie that night. We saw flags of our fathers, it was ok but i have seen better movies, the experience was great, before you watch the movie everyone stands for the national anthem, they have an intermission which was in the middle of a gripping scene and about 2 mins from the end the screen went black.

On the 31st i found out that the Dalai Lama was speaking so after checking out the Mumbai high court i went to check it out. It was the hottest i have felt in a long time, out in the middle of a dirt field. It was good to see him, and his messages were very great but he was not a very gripping speaker. After a while i went back and met up with the others, but it was another dry day so we went to see another movie, this time Blood Diamond. I thought it was a good movie and you should check it out. The experience this time was quite different we went to an old school cinema very Art Deco. The seats very uncomfortable and we had to get down so the people behind us could see. Through the whole movie people were talking and laughing at really innapropriate times, quite strange but that is that. Also i was looking straight down the aisle and there were mice running across it all movie.

We decided to check out Mahatma Gandhi`s house. This was great, they had a lot of his texts and letters up around the place, he was a great man, they had a letter he sent to Hitler in 1939 asking him not to start WWII. After this we walked up Malabar hill to have a look around. There was a great view of the city from here and some lovely parks. This was definitely the affluent part for town, he buildings more of a sydney standard, cleaner and well maintained. Since this was the first day you could drink since we arrived we decided to go out. We were quite disappointed with the night life really no one was out, there are not a lot of places to go out :( we gave it a good nudge however and had an ok time.

Mumbai is a great city, very different to the south. The South is much more traditional, Mumbai is much more western. We are flying to Jaipur on the 4th so only a few days left here. I really like settling down for a while in one place makes it easier to absorb the culture and atmosphere.
