Fletch Lives
![]() Mumbai v2 We decided to have a pretty easy day on the 2nd, with a late breaky then some action at the cricket. At the Famous Wankhede stadium we saw Mumbai playing Bengal in the final of the Ranji Trophy (their local test competition). The ground was quite empty but there was still plenty of atmosphere and noise. When we arrived there was some big hitting and we saw Sachin Tendulkar get a great ton to put the match well and truly in Mumbai’s favour. After the cricket we had a walk around and headed back to our hotel for a rest and some reading. While in Mumbai I read Mao`s Last Dancer, it is a great book about Li Cuxin, a communist peasant from China who lights up the worlds stages in ballet. I was quite enthralled with this book, great imagery and quite an easy read. As it was yet another dry day we hit the movies seeing Denzel Washington at his best in Déjà vu, a gripping story that is best left for day time television wedged in between Oprah and Dr Phil. Day two of the cricket seemed like a great plan, this was a little slower, Bengal were dropping like flies so that was great to watch. The best part of the day was yet to come, we planned to play cricket in the park at 4pm, They had a large central area called the Oval Maidan where there would be around 50-60 games of cricket going on. It is absolute chaos. There would be two pitches about 20m from each other with balls going every where. People chuck a lot, and cant really catch very well either, the pitch is like a goat track and you can never tell where the ball is going to end up. We joined some other games already going on, people loved for Aussies to play with them. After a while and a few different games we met some nice guys (age from around 14-40, a very funny mix). After a bit of bowling practice I even managed a few wickets which was great considering the last over I bowled in Australia consisted of 4 wides and 11 runs. After the cricket we managed to catch a two docos at the human rights film festival at the National Centre of Performing Arts. On entry it felt like back at school when you spent all your lunch time plying sport and had to go back inside, a little sweaty still carrying our cricket bat and ball. One of the films was about a Jewish guy being Gay and having troubles telling his parents, this was quite interesting seeing how a traditional Jewish Family of 10 takes the news. The Second film was on Hijra’s, basically Indian transvestites. This was really quite interested following three Hijras around Mumbai and hearing their story. Being our last night we wanted to go out again, Weh wasn’t that keen so Aaron and I headed out two a few places, we met these English guys who were cool and fun to hang around, so it ended up being quite a fun night out.
