Jaipur Day 1

Getting up for a 2 hour flight on not much sleep is not fun, but we managed. Arriving in Jaipur just after midday and in desperate need for some food and somewhere to stay we went on the dreaded accommodation walk with our backpacks, this is when about 5000 Indians feel it is their duty to inform you about cheap hotels and cheap rides to cheap hotels.

After settling on the Pink City Motel with no hot water and a toilet with a broken cistern we ventured out for some food. The further north in India the harder it is to find South Indian food (Vegetarian). We wanted to see Tiger Fort which overlooks the city at the top of a huge hill with a very steep incline. After venturing through town we were all getting quite sick out the touts and their incessant bantering, it is really quite draining, so it was good to aim for the fort, out of the way and plenty to see.

The kids in Jaipur seem to be obsessed with kites, and there are literally kites in every tree and on all the power lines. While walking around you will see kites 100m in the air (very simple diamond ones).

The climb was intense, about 150 vertical meters over 1km or so. When we were up the top we could climb along the inside of the walls and even on top of the walls, although this made me a little nervous, being 1ft from a 100m 75 degree drop. Weh seemed not to worry about this at all and could stand on top of the wall looking out, I could only manage to sit. The view from the fort was extraordinary looking all over Jaipur and to surrounding mountains. The city and boarded with large steep mountains in every direction.

There was a temple on the next hill which we wanted to reach before sunset, and there was no clear path, we saw another wall with a path outside the fort that was in ruins heading down the hill and decided to take that route. The hardest part was getting outside the fort to reach the path, we found part of the wall which was in ruins so went out there and walked along until we reach our steep, rough path. The hill was steep about 70 degrees and there were not many steps left at all, a fair bit of the time we were descending on piles of rocks, it was a great trip down and well worth the effort. After this we climbed to the temple but it was dark so we didn’t get a chance to see to much. The trip back to the motel consisted of a ride in the back of a Ute through the streets of Jaipur which was great!
