Last days in Melbourne with Andy

The day after I arrived back from the Great Ocean Road Andy arrived in Melbourne (Andy is a friend of mine from my dive club back in London). I showed him round Melbourne. I had planned to show him round Victoria Market (the largest and most famous market in Melbourne) and book us onto a Neighbours tour (have to go and see Ramsey Street!) but unfortunately the market wasn’t on and all the neighbours tours were fully booked!!! Boo!! So instead I took him to Chinatown, Delgraves Street (a famous alleyway bursting with café’s) for a coffee, Federation Square (the centre of entertainment in Melbourne) and then to Crown Casino and Entertainment Centre (The largest Casino in the Southern Hemisphere) situated along the Yarra River. As neither of us were much into gambling, and also didn’t really have much of a clue how to play anything, we didn’t stay there long!

We caught the free antique looking tram to Melbourne Old Gaol (where Ned Kelly was held and then hanged) in hope to get a guided tour round, but once again we were struck with bad luck and the tours were fully booked for that day!! Well think Andy was quietly pleased anyway as he spent the next 4.5 hrs catching up on sleep!

The next day we jumped on the Penguin Parade Tour bus, which I had booked us on the day before. The tour involved being taken to a regional winery for some wine tasting (that’s what sold me!), a tour of Wildlife Wonderland (where we stroked a wombat, and fed some Wallaby’s and Kangaroo’s and had our photo taken with a Koala), and a trip along Philip Island Coast before arriving at the Penguin Parade spot to watch the penguins make there way up the beach to their homes in the burrows (that was bloody freezing but well worth it). The penguins were so cute!!! Apparently they are the smallest penguins in the world. Was so strange to see them just waddle past your feet!!! Bless!!!

We got back to central Melbourne at about 11pm and not wanting to end the day early we headed out to Brunswick Street for a few drinks!

The next day, after copious amounts of hangover food and milk shakes Andy caught a flight to Sydney to meet up with his brother to continue his 3 week trip round OZ and I caught a 12hour over night bus to Sydney to meet up with Rita (another friend that I made whist on the Inca Trail)
