Busy Busy Busy

Hi Everyone,

What a busy week! It`s baking here and very humid. We are expecting rain soon but in the meantime, I am melting every afternoon. Thank goodness for cold showers, fans and cold beers although not necessarily in that order.

This Wednesday, I visited the Kakira Sugar Factory that is owned by Indians and operates in must the same way as Rowntree did in Victorian times. He cares for his workers from cradle to grave. The place is vast 240,000 acres and employs a small town of workers. Indeed they have their own town  - hospital, more than a dozen schools, supermarkets everything. The owner lives on site in a vast Indian Style mansion and guess what... to my delight, they have horses - the first I have seen in uganda. They looked pretty feisty arab types but they really made my day. At this sugar factory, they also have their own airstrip. For some reason, the guards reckoned I looked like one of the owners grandchildren so I was treated like royality wherever I went! I also got to look around the sweetie manufacturing place and they still do most of the work by hand! Also, another weird thing the factory CEO is an English man and he  comes from Chipping Camden - how bizzare is that -- we were described by Godfrey as coming from the same tribe.

Today, I have just come back from my HIV bush clinic and today we really went to the middle of nowheres-ville. It took us an hour to get there along the bumpiest of tracks - note to self must wear my sports bra next time!!! You do see the strangest things in the bush - you go from oxen driving a plough to adverts for mobile phones all in the space of 100 metres and then there is the man on a bike with a rack full of handbags on the back! - the mind bogles - not the most necessary thing that i would think that you will need in the bush!

I`m back at school now preparing for the visitors that are coming this weekend so it`s going to be manic but enjoyable. I hope you all have a great time and only three weeks to go now Pamela!!!

Sending you all lots and lots of love
