The End

So. After 2 years and 3 months, or 867 days I have found my way home again. My journey ended on a very sad note with the death of my cousin. I had planned to go over land all the way home, but I decided to fly home directly from Tashkent, Uzbekistan instead.

When I left Sweden all that time ago I was planning on going around the World without any flying. That changed quite quickly though. It proved to be too difficult to arrange the boat from South Africa to Brazil. I`d have to book it at least 8 months or so in advance. So instead I opted to fly from Johannesburg to New York. And then my plan to go from LA to Shanghai by boat was kind of ruined as well since I really wanted to visit South America. So then I flew from Montevideo to Singapore as well. And finally from Tashkent to Copenhagen. But I did go over land from Löddeköpinge, Sweden to Johannesburg, New York to Montevideo, and Singapore to Bukhara. I have no idea how many kilometers or hours I`ve spent riding on various buses and probably I`m better off not knowing. I`d be scared to think about how many it is.

Even though I changed my plans quite drastically I still managed to do all the things that I had planned to do. Like visit the mountain gorillas in Central Africa, going by boat around the Darien gap between Panama and Colombia, visit Samarkand and Bukhara. I`ve done far more than I could possibly have imagined before hand. Like spending 10 incredible days in the heart of the Amazonas, travel by river boats from Ecuador to Bolivia, celebrating Eid with a family in Omdurman.

I`ve gone through 43 countries on this trip. And before you ask I will not choose a favorite. It`s far too difficult to choose one that stands out more than the others. But even though I been gone for so long and have visited so many countries I`ve been lucky enough not to have experienced any really bad things. No muggings or anything like that. The only thing that was stolen from me was a pair of shoes in Costa Rica. They were awfully smelly so I was probably better off without them anyway.

Another thing I had planned was to visit as many World Heritage Sites as possible. In the end I visited 49 sites. And my total is now at 96 out of 851. Not so many it might seem. But considering that most sites are in countries that I haven`t really visited it`s still a fair number.

In the beginning of my trip I was a bit worried about my weight loss. I started the trip at a whopping 104 kilos. When I arrived back at my parents house I was down to 85. So I`ve lost about 20 kilos on this trip. And I feel far better than I did before. Not that I`ve tried to loose weight at all during the trip. I think it comes down mostly to being far more active than I`ve ever been before. Lets see if I can keep that up.

Money wise I`ve done really well. My budget of 25 Euros per day over 2 years has lasted far longer than I thought. After 2 years and 3 months I still have a bit of money left. Not very much. But enough to pay for a short holiday in Istanbul.

I guess this is my last entry on this blogg. So I would like to say thank you to everyone who has followed my way around the world. For me it has been an absolutely incredible journey. It`ll take some time to melt all my impressions and to get settled back into a "normal" life again.  Part of me wishes that this trip didn`t have to end. But another part of me is satisfied with the time that I`ve spent on it and is really happy to be back home with my family and friends again.
