Gavin & Helen in SE Asia
No Photos 14th Apr 2008 - 15th Apr 2008
Our last entry, Sniffle

We awoke Monday morning for what would be our last day in Bangkok and the last day of our marathon tour around South East Asia. We had brekkie and packed our stuff before stashing our bulging rucksacks in Wendy`s store cupboard after checking out of our room. We weren`t due to fly until 1am so we had a full day left, we headed out into Siam Square and into the MBK center, a huge shopping centre right on our doorstep. Almost like the Chatuchak market each of the 5 floors of this giant mall was made up of stalls selling much of the same stuff the market yesterday had on offer. We headed for the food court and had a lunch of Dim Sum, after getting lost a few times we crossed the 3rd floor walkway into the Siam Discovery center another huge shopping mall. Helen quickly snapped up some bargins on trainers and a dress while I bought a few books.

Siam Square really is a mecca for shopping and like all shopping centres they make it impossible for you to leave by getting you lost. We found out we`d inadvertedly crossed into the Siam Center, which was as expensive as Oxford street. After having a mooch around some gadget shops we went into the last shopping mall, the Siam Paragon, Bangkoks newest and fanciest mall. We spent the afternoon wandering around the HUGE food court on the ground floor, which for Thai food lovers is the equivalent of being in heaven. We spent ages wandering around the food stalls salivating, the average prices for dishes was around 25 - 80 baht (1-2 pounds). We finally settled for a Vietnamese restaurant and a set meal of spring rolls, dumplings and spicy pork with rice noodles, it was delicious and brought back memories of Vietnam.

Evening came and the time finally came for us to make our back through the labyrinth of shopping malls to Wendys to collect our bags and head to the airport. Slowely dragging our feet we reluctantly headed back and called a cab. On the way to the airport we watched as tuk tuks piled full of young thais were drenching each other across a lane while the light was on red. Once at the airport we had a 3 hour wait until our flight was due to leave for Dubai. Eventually and begrudgingly we boarded the plane and waved goodbye to a great country and continent.

I really want to say on behalf of Helen and myself how happy we are for receiving the well wishes on our message board and hope you`ve all enjoyed reading about our adventures. We`ve really had the best time, its hard to sum up into words, we`ve had such highs from the trip and personally speaking the experience has opened my eyes alot! and given me a new perspective on life, which I hope won`t fade away too soon when I`m back sitting at my desk getting hypnotised by a 9-5 job. Anyway the times come to bring the diary to an end, we`re both looking forward to seeing you all very soon!
