Tango, football, steak and surfing!

We have been in South America for almost 2 weeks now and have managed to do so much it feels like we have been here for months!

We flew into Buenos Aires and were shocked at just how big the city is. We stayed for 5 days and while we were there we had a couple of Spanish lessons as not that many people speak English. Our lessons were held in a cafe which was authentically Spanish! We are getting there slowly and are trying to speak it as much as possible but its hard work learning from scratch!

We also attended 2 tango classes...was hilarious and despite what Ali might say by the time he gets home he really enjoyed it!! After our second class we went to a Mellonge, which is a traditional tango club that the locals go and dance at. It was facinating to watch but Ali and I have a long, long, long way to go before joining in!

We also went to a Boca Juniors football game. Obviously I had no idea who they were and had never heard of them but ali was very excited. It was the quarter final of the South American cup against Atlas from Mexico. I had a fantastic time! It was quite scary initially as the fans are known for being extremely passionate (in other words lunatics and often violent!)  A group of us from the hostel went together but on the way our taxis got seperated. We were the only ones in our taxi and when we arrived at the stadium, the taxi driver wouldnt let us out of the car until he had found someone to escort us in!! He was looking for a policeman but in the end he settled with a local family. They were so lovely and the only English words they knew were Manchester United! They really looked after us and looked terrified when they thought Ali was going to take his ticket out if his pocket incase it got stolen! They showed us to the correct gate and then we wre on our own to face the endless searches and security checks! Ali got searched about 6 times and i got searched 3 times- i have never seen so much security before! We finally got into the stadium and met up woth the others. The game was fantastic and the fans didnt stop singing from beginning to end. The atmosphere was incredible. The countless police inside the stadium were far more interested in the game than watching the fans, who to be fair were very well behaved! We didnt see any violence whilst in there which was a worry before we arrived. the final score was 2-2 and we were so happy Boca didnt loose. All in all a great night!

We spent a lot of time wandering around Buenos Aires and still didnt get to see a lot of it. We saw a tango show on the street which was pretty cool. We also went to a cemetary which was like a town but with tombs instead of houses- very bizarre. It is where eva Peron (Evita) is buried. We wandered down Avenue Florida which is a bit like Oxford Street- so busy with people at all hours of the day!

One evening I met up with Maria, who I worked in Escondidos with as she was back in Buenos Aires visiting family. We then went out for a steak with people from the hostel and Argentinian steaks really are as good as people say!

Last week we got the boat to Uruguay. We spent the first few days in Montevideo (the capital) and it was a nice city but not much to do. we saw a few markets but 2 days was really enough. We have spent the past week travelling up the coast of Uruguay and stayed in some lovely beach towns. The first was called Punto Del Este and was a lovely place to stay but a very wealthy area and very built up. It has a famous statue of a hand emerging from the sand which is quite cool. We then moved up to La Paloma, which in the summer months I can imagine is lovely but while we were there it was dead...everything was shut, we saw more dogs than people and it reminded me of New Romney...we only stayed one night! We have spent the past few days in Punta Del Diablo which has been my favourite place in uruguay. It is a stunning seaside town with sandy roads and lovely beaches. We attempted surfiing here and were rubbish!! Ali managed to stand up a few times but I didnt get up once! The sea was strong so it was difficult to swim out far enough but it was lovely and warm!

This weekend we are travelling up into Brazil. It is going to take all weekend but should be there on Monday, Going to get overnight buses so we arrive in the day time. The weather here hasnt been great- lots of storms and rain so looking forward to getting some sun in Brazil!

Thats all for now!

Lots of Love Kelly xxx
