It's a Hard Life!
16th Sep 2008
Things you may not know about our world tour...

I am sure we will keep adding to this list as time goes on but for now, here is a shortish list of a few things about our trip (in no particular order...)

  • We have circumvented the globe in just short of 12 months...which is 25,000 miles...but we have definitely covered more miles than that in our travels within the countries we have visited!
  • 12 countries in nearly 12 months (India, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, USA and Canada)
  • 12 flights all over the world, countless train and bus journeys (in cattle and first class!), two motorhomes, 7 cars and so many taxis and tuk tuks that I have lost count...and we have walked quite a bit as well!
  • Carrying nearly 30kg of gear most of the time divided between our two packs. We look like pack horses when we have them on our backs (and fronts!)
  • 3 incidents of delhi belly (although Mick’s was probably Thai belly not Delhi Belly...), two incidents of “Cambodia” belly, one cracked rib, one swollen ear and a dodgy tooth... a relatively short list of ailments on our trip...
  • A million and one mosquito bites – mostly coming in Queensland, Australia!
  • We have sent home 10 boxes of gear and souvenirs in the last year alone!
  • Handled all sorts of currency; rupees, dong, kip, baht, riel, ringgit, pacific franc, dollars (US, Aus, NZ, Canada, Singapore)...
  • Meetings with familiar faces in Kerala (India), Port Douglas (Australia), Airlie Beach (Australia), Sydney (Australia), Tahiti (French Polynesia), San Francisco (USA), Portland (USA), Cambridge (USA)...fancy bumping into so many people we know!
  • Spending Christmas and New Year in Bangkok...complete with full on Christmas meal in a local pub (including Christmas carols!) and even buying our own Christmas tree for the hotel room!
  • Celebrating one birthday in Bangkok (complete with cake provided by the hotel for Mick) and one birthday in Hanoi (complete with cake and flowers for Sarah!)
  • Highs of 35+ degrees (in India and Asia)...lows of 10 degrees in New Zealand!
  • All sort of weather...sun, snow, hail, wind, rain, you name it...but we must say we have been really lucky and have had mostly sunny weather on the whole trip!
  • Skiing, snowboarding, whale watching, dune buggy rides, sandboarding, swimming, white water rafting, schweebing, jetboat trips, kayaking with seals and dolphins, fishing, mudbaths, massages, bridge climbing, feeding and washing elephants, river and sea kayaking, hot balloon ride, desert island camping trip, great barrier reef snorkelling, hippo tour, toy train rides, reverse bungy swing, speedboating, the list goes on...
  • We had a culture vulture overload in most of the countries that we have visited. Highlights include the Golden Temple (in Amritsar), Hampi temples, Angkor Wat, Royal palace in Cambodia, Vietnamese war history and all the colonial history of the States and Canada.
  • Natural wonders also made up our trip such as the elephants in Laos, the mudbaths in Nha Trang (Vietnam), the glorious beaches of Langkawi and Koh Lipe, Great barrier reef, whales et al in NZ, Milford and Doubtful Sound in NZ, Mt  St Helen in the US, Volcanic landscape of North Island in NZ, Sand dunes and Crater lake in Oregon, Sweeping redstone bluffs in PEI, the list goes on...
  • A room costing 2 pounds a night, and another room that cost 200 pounds a night...can you guess where they were?
  • A meal costing 30p and ones that cost up to 40 quid...
  • Not having to cook for ourselves for 6 months...until we got to the Australian leg of the trip...one of the best parts...there was no washing up!
  • Discovering new delicacies on our travels; curries of every variety, the heat of thai food, noodle soups in Vietnam, tempura as light as a feather in Asia, East meets West in Singapore, more steaks than you can shake a stick at in Australia, lamb (lamb and lamb) in New Zealand, French influences in Tahiti, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Quebec, the best fresh berries in Nova Scotia, lobster madness in Maine, the biggest takeaway pizza in LA, fabulous seafood in PEI, diner food on the road in West coast USA and too much food overall on our Western leg!!
  • Oh I nearly forgot...Mick sampled one of the Cambodian delicacies...deep fried tarantulas...:-)
  • People have asked us where the best beer was...we have to say that in SE Asia, Laos beer was pretty darn drinkable. In India of course its the Kingfisher et al...although you have to drink these covertly in the more religious towns...In NZ it was Speights, in Australia I definitely preferred the wine to the beer...and in the USA and Canada you are literally falling over yourself at the microbrewery beers.
  • Over 500 diary entries and well over 2,500 pics on the blog...with many more pics loaded on our computer we have well over 10,000 in all...don’t worry we won’t be boring you all to death with them...!!
  • Countless memories and a life changing experience...who could ask for more!
