The World Baby!
19th Oct 2009 - 24th Oct 2009
Kuala Lumpur

It was a stress free border crossing between Singapore and Malaysia. Everyone filed off the bus to have their passports and departure cards checked and stamped out of Singapore. The bus then took us a short ten minutes drive through no mans land to then be stamped in to Malaysia. Arriving in Kuala Lumpur the bus dropped us off at Pudu Bus Station where we got our sixth currency of the trip so far and headed for the hostel. We were welcomed at the Paradiso B&B by Tino & Paul and we spent the rest of the night catching up and exchanging travel stories, with a few drinks on the roof terrace.

On our first day in the city Tess visited the Doctor for the Indian tummy bug which had been hanging around for over a month now. Loaded up with a bags of various pills we then set off for the Menara Kuala Lumpur, which is the fourth highest telecommunications tower in the World. The entry ticket for the Tower included an audio guide which described the features of the cities skyline which we viewed through the 360 degree windows at the top of the tower. Bizarrely the entry ticket also included a shot on a formula 1 arcade game, a small zoo which featured mainly reptiles, amphibians and spiders, if you wanted you could buy a live mouse to feed to a snake! There was also a pony ride included but we didn't partake as it was so small our knees would have been dragging along the ground. In the afternoon we payed a visit to The National Museum where we got a good insight in to the country's history. One of the exhibits allowed you to play with traditional Malaysian children's toys. The museum was set in the peaceful Lake Gardens where we went for a walk afterwards, until the mosquitos came out in force and started to attack.

The following morning we were up early to get tickets for the Petronas Towers, the head quarter for Petronas the national petroleum company. There is an allocation of free tickets which are given on a first come first served basis and we managed to get tickets and a time to return later that afternoon. We killed time in one of the shiney shopping malls below the towers. The Moto GP was in Kuala Lumpur that week and we saw Rossi's and Lorenzo's bikes on display. We were happy to hide inside the mall away from the torrential rain outside. At the foot of the towers we learned about how the towers were designed and built, as a civil engineer Paul was quite excited by this. When our time for the towers came around we were taken up 41 floors in a small group to the Sky Bridge which connects the two towers. We walked out over the steel and glass bridge for views of the city below. That night we headed for the Reggae Bar, strangely in China Town, where we tried to make the most of ladies night with heavily discounted beverages for ladies. We managed to talk the guys out of dressing up as women to get cheap drinks, but there were quite a few "ladies" who had suspiciously large hands and seemed to be getting away with it!

We met up with our Aussie friends Becs & Scott and a couple of their friends the following evening. We headed out for dinner together and ate at a local eatery at the side of the road where we sampled "chicken fish", which as the name implies is a fish which is supposed to taste similar to chicken. It was delicious. We all hopped in to taxis bound for the Petronas Twin Towers to see them all lit up against the night sky, unfortunately after a mad dash across town the lights switched off just as we pulled up, typical! We went to the Seasons Bar which had four rooms all themed as a different season. The Autumn room had leaves blowing around in it, the Summer room was hot, the Winter room was cold and the Spring room was an open air bar and each room played different music. The inside walkway between the rooms rained for five minutes every hour, a quirky addition to the already interesting bar!

The next day it was Pam's turn to visit the Doctor, prescribed with the same drugs as Tess she spent the day recuperating on the couch. Meanwhile Tess, Tino and Paul took a wander around the markets in China town, with all the usual fake designer watches, clothes etc. In the evening we made it back to see the Twin Towers lit up and twinkling, very pretty. Kuala Lumpur city is a busy but organised mix of modern and traditional Asia, with sky scrapers and smelly street food stalls side by side. The Malaysian flag flies everywhere showing they are very proud of their nation.
