Tom "The Pom" on Tour
18th Feb 2005 - 26th Feb 2005
Sampling the nightlife!

Well, with Mum gone, things can certainly return to their normal state now, and the room doesn`t have to be so tidy for starters! So much is happening at the moment, and although it may not all be in Sydney at the moment, it is certainly involving us. The 6 Nations has got off to a poor start for a Pom who is in Australia. But the Ireland match tonight could be the biggest test for me, as the different nationalities of the gap students in Sydney clash for a big one. The plast two weeks have been really great fun actually. We had a great night out in Central Sydney last Monday at Scubar. Those who have done a gap year in Sydney will certainly know it, and those that are yet to come will definately get to know it. Monday nights there are so funny. It gets packed out with backpackers and they have such great competitions. The main highlight is the crab racing that happens, which draws in a great crowd in fairness. Having met the manager and sweet talked him, we now won`t have to queue to get in ever again which is a great relief as a friend queued for 2 hours last week, before we decided to just leave anyway! Wednesday night drew us to the Greenwood Hotel in North Sydney which is never that busy on a Wednesday, but packed out on a Thursday. So that was pretty quiet and a few too many brewskis were consumed all to quickly I think. It was however the curtain raiser for the weekend, when Mo, a Scottish gap student, had her 19th birthday underneath the Opera House in Opera Bar. The theme was fancy dress, and although I had brainstormed for many an hour and planned many a costume, I never got anything, so turned up and people were in great costumes, as the photos go to show! But this was, looking back on it, the best night of the year so far. Everyone was on top form at a top place, and it was so surreal that we were in a fancy dress party next to one of the most famous landmarks in the world. The only regret is that we didn`t get a massive photo of us all on the steps of the Opera House, which was a shame. When we moved on from there to the Rocks, things got a bit chaotic, with 40 or so 18/19 year olds trekking across Circular Quay. When the Irish came out singing Athen Rye, the English came back bigger and better with Jerusalem. This was my queue and I put the songs that I had learnt from the tennis in Melbourne in to practice. The Barmy Army theme: "Everywhere we go... People always ask us... Where we come from..." was orchestrated by yours truly and it was an emotional performance. I thought I could have been making a tit out of myself, but actually everyone sang at the top of their voices in return to my lead, and it could be heard loud and clear at the Rocks. An effort! To keep the birthday girl happy, I also joined her in a version of Flower of Scotland too, which didn`t go down well with everyone else! Suprise suprise, that tired me out enormously and sapped all the energy and my voice away from me, and it was a fairly early retirement from there on in. So tonight is the big one, and I will be parading the skin tight shirt there is no doubting that, and a photo will be put on of that don`t worry. Hope everyone is well, and best wishes to everyone.
