ThompsonTravels

HeyI'm Jay im 19 and from the Isle of Man! This is short summery of my adventures to the South Pacific country of Tuvalu as a Scout Ambassador for the UK Scout Association working for and supporting the Scouts of Tuvalu. This is going to be the biggest challenge of my life so far. I want to share the experience with as many people as possible so if you interested keep up to date here. Tuvalu is one of the most remote civilisations in the world, being the forth smallest interdependent nation. During my trip I will travel roughly 9,425 miles stopping off in London, Seoul, Australia, Fiji and eventually getting to Funafuti around the 10th of November.Andy also has a blog http://andyexplores.wordpress.com/if you interested. Also I am on twitter http://twitter.com/#!/ThompsonTravelsThanks

Here we go......

The time has finally come. With a little help from time zones and a 747 I can safely say that I will be home tomorrow. Currently in Inchon Airport in South Korea waiting for my plane to the UK. The last time I wrote a blog I was in Tuvalu. Now sitting in an airport with much more land mass than Tuvalu I can"t help but think about when I was in the same airport on my way to Australia, Fiji and...

Thanks for the memories...

The time has come and the bags are packed (well nearly). So this is it. Feeling very nervous and apprehensive about getting on a plane for the first time in a long while. This blog is about what I will miss about Tuvalu and what I am looking forward to on my return home. After living in a country for a while you are bound to miss certain things about it when you leave. I know looking back in year...

Scout Camp...

First of all I think need to say sorry for the lack of blogs in the last month or two. I am still alive and well, just to clarify. I have good and bad news. The bad news is that the UK is still suffering from the most rainfall in 100 years (you know the sort of statistic the MET seem to come up with every year ). The good news is that Scouting in Tuvalu is stronger and more exciting than ever and ...

Vaitupu Trip...

In a scene not too dissimilar from the train on platform 9 and ¾ leaving for Hogwarts, Students waved goodbye to mums, dads, brother, sisters, sons and daughters from onboard the Manu Folau leaving for high school in Vaitupu where they would live for the next 12 weeks. The students left Funafuti on the boat to start the new school term at boarding school . It was an emotional scene with so...

Shelter Building...

As well as communication, team work and communication Scouting teaches young people many other skills. Growing up in Scouting I learnt many of these skills through being part of a team and working together. I remember one camp we did when I first moved up from Cubs to Scouts. I had been camping before with Cubs and outside of Scouting but that camp would be my first experience of making my own sle...

Outer Islands Adventure...

All over the world the 100 year anniversary of the tragedy of the Titanic was marked in many different ways. Mainly by repeating the Titanic film a couple of times of TV but with Tuvalu being a sea faring nation sending a large amount of sailors around the globe it commemorated it with a Tuvaluan style BBQ on the beach at the office that deals with sea farers recruitment (ALFHA). A one minutes sil...

Growing up on a tropical island with bath warm water clear as glass and the nearest beach never being more than a few hundred meters away young people know how to swim. Growing up on an island (a little less tropical) myself I love the sea and do get withdrawals when I don"t see if for a few days. I fish, kayak and spend most of my time on the beach when I am in the Isle of Man (no matter the...

A Generic Easter Paradise...

Chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner with some egg hunting and rolling mixed in. Maybe a church service or a family outing with an afternoon walk. Most families in the UK will have something of that combination in mind when wondering what to do at Easter. However for me this year as the UK wakes up to a Easter Sunday morning I was getting off a boat in the scorching Pacific sun after a weeken...

How Time Flys...

Being a Manx lad the spaghetti network of the London underground madness people call the tube is a completely baffling to me. All those millions of people going backwards and forwards at a horrific speed going about their daily lives. It was a mystery to me then when I had to cross the UK and London to go to Gilwell park (UK Scout HQ) one year ago today. It seemed like an adventure, to be going o...

One Small Step for a Scout, one massive step for Scouting...

30 million Scouts in 216 different countries and territories and not one Scout group is the same. Different adventures, interests and ambitions. Growing up in my first Scout group I got a passion for the outdoors and running around getting cold, wet and muddy. Other groups will lead you down different paths and you will take different steps. No two countries with Scouting are the same. So when we ...
