Tikal

3 am starts are never fun, particularly when you are forced to wait in the rain for your transport that arrives an hour late. Running past guards with heavy guns, through pitch-black jungle paths with no torch (flashlight) while howler monkeys that sound like giant carnivorous beasts fill the air with their screams can also be disconcerting. But all this became a distant memory when we emerged a...

From Mexico to Guatemala

The minivan pulled up at 5 am on the dot. It was jam-packed so Iris and I both sat at the front, next to the driver. We stopped not far out of town for a nice road-side thatched roof cafeteria breakfast before proceeding another hour or so. Our van stopped and we were unceremoniously dumped with our bags in the middle of nowhere - apparently our van was going on to check out some other ruin...

Palenque Ruins

We had as much of a sleep in as we could with the neighborhood rooster crowing every 15 minutes starting at 3 am and the noisy shops across the street opening at 6 am. We then had a delicious breakfast - scrambled eggs and sausage, pancakes, orange juice and coffee (again, not very "Mexican" but good at least, this time!).We jumped on the local collectivo to the Mayan ruins of Palenque, 8 km ...

San Christobal to Palenque

Iris spent a good couple of hours being very nauseous and then vomiting in the bus toilet on the road from Oaxaca to San Cristobal. The road was very windy and even I was feeling some motion sickness. My poor sister, though, suffered terribly and arrived in San Cristobal after almost 12 hours on the bus feeling very much worse for wear. She stopped taking the malaria tablets - it doesn´t seem t...

Riot police in Oaxaca

We didn´t have a proper tour book for Oaxaca (pronounced Wa-ha-ka), but I read up on it while browsing through travel books at a NYC Borders. It sounded cool and was on route to San Cristobal and Palenque, where I wanted to go next. The bus ride from Mexico City was very comfortable, if somewhat expensive, and we pulled into Oaxaca station just after sunset.Since we were only spending one ni...

Teotihuacan and Babel

While it was nice hanging around Mexico City, the real reason I came here was so I could visit the nearby Aztec ruins of Teotihuacan. We saw some tours on offer which would take us to the ruins for $350-400 pesos but we figured we could try to get there ourselves for much cheaper and for more of an adventure! So we hopped on the subway, changed a few stops and arrived at Mexico City´s "North" ...

Mexico city: protests to Kahlo

I ended up being stuck waiting at Mexico City Airport for 12 hours because my sister´s flight from Japan was delayed. I hadn´t slept at all the night before so by the time Iris FINALLY emerged from the arrival gate I´d been awake for over 48 hours. I was delirious with exhaustion and was deliriously happy to see my fabulously gorgeous baby sister after almost 4 months and to, then, finally get o...

New York, New York!

"Home again!", I couldn´t help but feel. Sydney is my home by choice and I never hesitate to declare it the best city in the world but New York, the city of my birth and the first home I´ve ever known, will always hold a special place in my heart. There simply is no other place like it!My first few days back in the Big Apple were spent very low-key. I very unsociable hadn´t contacted any of...

I met her in Miami...

I landed in Miami Tuesday night, physically and emotionally exhausted. Sleep wasn´t regular in London and the 8 hour flight from Heathrow to JFK, followed by a 4 hour wait before my 4 hour flight to Miami completely drained me of any spare energy I had left. I spent most of the time either sleeping or trying not to cry.It was hard leaving London. And I always get very emotional whenever I r...

Leaving the Continent and on to London

I had the morning to run around Munich before my flight to London. I walked back down to the pedestrian shopping streets, admiring the architecture and enjoying a live whip demonstration along with other tourists and Saturday morning shoppers. I decided I really liked Munich - full of crazy street performers, beautiful buildings and parks. I sat in a park for a while, watching leaves fall, ...
