FYI...

Due to a very electrical rainy season and subsequent internet failure in Zambia:... I am SO getting on Facebook and/or Snapfish. God bless my little blog here, but the internet connection here just isn't sophisticated enough for Get Jealous. Or maybe it's GJ's fault. But whatever. I mean, come on, I have dozens - nay, HUNDREDS - of pictures from the Virgin Islands, the Marine Ball, and my Christma...

Mobile VCT in Gonhwe!...

One of my big recent projects was a mobile VCT event in my village. For those of you who don't know, VCT stands for Voluntary Counseling & Testing, and it allows people to get tested for HIV. They receive their results right after they get their blood tested, and they also receive advice on safe sex and nutrition after that.Six testers rode in from Monze from the Catholic Diocese to test anyon...

The Nsima Games and the GLOW workshop...

Okay, so August was a busy month. After I got back from Luapula, I went to Choma a month later for the inaugural Dirty South Nsima Games. We got seven new volunteers in Southern Province and decided to welcome them in the sickest way possible - with a tournament comprised exclusively of nsima-related sports and activities. There was nsima wrestling, a dunk tank filled with porridge, nsima pie-in-th...

My Wicked-Cool Trip To Luapula....

You're probably going, "Okay, does that girl ever do any work, or does she just gallivant around Africa in unreliable vehicles?"

Well, I mean, I work. Occasionally. Last week, though, I was definitely in Luapula Province, which is almost in the Congo. Aka "not working." Luapula's about twelve hours by public transport away from Monze (my boma), so there was an almost unhealthy emphasis on the "...

All About Gonhwe...

Gonhwe's only 7 km away from Keemba, you wouldn't think it'd be so different.

Somehow it is, though. I tried to keep up a happy face about Keemba, but in retrospect that's kinda hard to maintain, given that it took them four months to fix my roof, nobody wanted to do any HIV/AIDS work except the positive living group, and I got evicted from the clinic. Now that I'm in Gonhwe, I don't even have...

Bye bye Keemba Clinic......

Okay, so maybe some of my problems DID get solved while I was busy learning to roll wit it in Namibia.

I went back to site last week with Ashley and I gave the clinic staff my canned speech on the state of my housing: "Ah, but you have become like family to me, but because you have failed to find new accomodations for me, I'm afraid I will have to move someplace else..." [When they speak Engli...

K Monster's Epic Vacation - P.S....

I left Windhoek for Livingstone on a big bus. That's EIGHTEEN HOURS on a bus...I was a blithering idiot by the end. Doesn't matter how comfy those seats are; a bus ride that long pretty much sucks no matter how you slice it. But, I had met some cool folks on the bus who were going to L-stone too. And, I just didn't wanna go home yet, so...

I kicked it in Livingstone and went to Botswana with so...

K Monster's Epic Vacation - Namibia...

A lot of people go into the desert looking for a religious experience. They expect to emerge as perfectly serene, enlightened beings... like little Buddhas in overpriced outdoor sandals. Was this me before I headed to Namibia? Yep. Captain Cliche, at your service.

I recall telling Annie, Brad, Dre and a few others that when I came out of the desert, all my problems would be solved. The issues o...

K Monster's Epic Vacation - The Cape...

It's really nice to know that no matter how much some things change, others stay the same.

Like my parents. I was hitting the 10-month slump, in which I was getting disillusioned and lonely and just generally pissy with life and development work in Zambia, and then I got to hang out with my favorite old farts for two weeks. And, thank heaven, they're pretty much the same old farts they were whe...

K Monster's Epic Vacation - Victoria Falls...

Okay, first of all, I know it's not really the 27th of April. It's kind of like Dad signing my Christmas presents "From Leo." You know it's not really a gift from Leonardo DiCaprio, but it's fun to pretend, eh? And anyway, I have to date it that way or else the computer thinks there are no photos that go with the... never mind. Your eyes are glazing over. On with the show...

We spent one night ...
