Home Sweet Home (sort of)

And so now we are back in the UK. Great timing, we arrived in the middle of a cold spell and a recession. It feels quite strange as we are home but not quite there yet. There is still a tenant in our flat so we are staying with Robyn and Craig. We are not settling in too much as we are off to the States on the 28th to visit Bonny's brother and his new daughter. We are using the short time we ...

A slow race through Europe

With Europe being so expensive and also on our doorstep in London we decided to zoom through as quick as we could taking only one tourist stop at Maranello to see the Ferrari factory. For those of you who don't know, Mike has been a Ferrari fan all of his life and had always wanted to make the pilgrimage. You know that you are getting close to the factory as there are loads of statues of prancin...

Venice

The awful Anek Lines ferry was worth it as it took us to Venice where we were meeting very good friend Robyn and Craig for the weekend. We were really looking forward to seeing them and catching up with their news. It is great to be around people who know our backgrounds and personalities so you can have a conversation that goes deeper that where you are from and where you have been. It was als...

Haifa to Venice - A week on two very different ferries

And off to Europe we head. We were not sure what to expect on our fist ferry having been told that it was not a traditional ferry but a cargo ferry so we were pleasantly surprised. It was a cargo ship and we were given the owners cabin to sleep in. It was really quite big with three rooms and couches. We had landed with our bums in the butter. All meals were included so we ate with the crew e...

Haifa

And finally it was time to head back to Haifa. We decided to take Yatam and Naama up on their invite to stay with them. We had a great time. Yatam is a seasoned Sheesha smoker and so gave us the low down on what we needed to improve wit Mike's sheesha. He went all the way down to the quality of the tin foil you use. It looks like we will need a bit of practice. Both Yatam and Naama both prac...

Sea of Galilee

After the winery we headed down to Katzrin for a beer tasting. One of the great things about Israel is that it is a nation of immigrants so the food and drink comes from all corners of the world. We treated ourselves to a proper German beer tasting. The waiter was an Israeli but lived in a kibbutz with a load of South Africans and Aussies so he loved rugby and played for the local team. We pre...

Ein Zivan

We drove up to what we thought would be our final site in Golan, Mount Hermon, the highest spot in Israel. On the way we were side tracked by three guys from the army who wanted to have coffee with us and gave us some advice on where to go. One of them, Roy, has a friend who runs a winery in Ein Zivan so we headed there. On the way we stopped at an old Israeli bunker which overlooks Syria and w...

Nimrod

We headed westward towards Nimrod and spent two nights there while we caught up on chores. We stayed at a great campsite with a wpnderful view and teepees but oh my gosh did it get cold at noght. It was not quite as cold as Ethiopia as we did not need to sleep with all of our clothes on but it was very close. There were two cheeky puppies at the campsite and we had a great time playing with the...

Banias

Banias was our next tourist destination. We took a walk down to a lovely waterfall and then wndered around an ancient temple dedicated to the dancing goats. There were also some natural springs which are the source of the Jordan River and a cave in which Herod built a temple. Unfortunately the sight also contains the grave of the prophet Elijah so we had to share the beautiful nature with loads...

Hula Valley

Next stop was the Hula Valley. It is home to thousands and thousands of cranes. There was a tractor working in one of the fields the birds were and we had a great time watching huge flocks take off as it approached. We also saw one of the most beautiful kingfishers, a variety we have not yet been able to name so any help would be appreciated. It had white, brown and brilliant blue plumage. It...
