Drive to Rim Rock Dogwood Cabins in Shawnee National Forest

2011-06-04

We slept in (are you seeing a theme?) and pretty much skipped breakfast since we left the Hyatt about 10:30 to go to Union Station. We scattered around the food court and had lunch together before Joe and his kids headed north back to Bloomington and we three headed south east to the cabin we rented in Shawnee National Forest. We got into a little construction that caused us an extra 30 minutes but got what last minute supplies we needed in Harrisburg before traveling the last 25 minutes to Rimrock’s Dogwood cabins. Dixie had the air conditioning on for us so we arrived to a nice and cool cabin which we enjoyed since it was 94 without the heat index as we were carrying in our stuff. We got settled and decided to cook dinner in the cabin rather than build a campfire as the temperature hadn’t dropped and I had no volunteers to make the fire because of it. So they were spoiled with chicken florentine and penne pasta, apple sauce and garlic bread. It made the cabin smell great. We played some cards and decided to venture out and check out Pounds Hollow Lake around 7 pm. The boys swam for about and hour. I’d heard enough from the other beach patrons foul conversations and decided we’d also check out Rimrock Trail as well. The sun was setting when we arrived there 4 minutes from Pounds Hollow so we headed out on the hike to try and get to the west side of the cliff to catch the sunset. Missed it a little and decided there were other places to try but we’ll be going back there tomorrow as there is a set of stairs going down the edge of the cliff the boys wanted to venture down but it was getting too dark. As it was we finished our hike in the dark and made our jokes about getting lost in the forest. We arrived back at the cabin to shower and play another hand of Skipbo before hitting the pillow. Tomorrow we plan to start the day with Garden of the Gods...
