Coober Pedy to Port Augusta

2012-07-11

We got up and left Cadney Homestead nice and early. As we were approaching Coober Pedy, Glenn was trying to get Shannon to have a snooze, so we could bypass the town even singing lullabies at one stage but to know avail.

We were off for some opal shopping... Our first impression was "Wow" What a strange place. Most of the shops were underground in fact 80% of the population live underground. Everything was very dusty and dirty with piles of rubble and breather pipes everywhere. We first went to the "old mine museum" which was very interesting and then to an old left over spaceship from the movie, Pitch black. Rhys and Bridie thought it was awesome.. We then had a lovely lunch in an underground cafe, next door to "Barney Rubbles" a very appropriately named shop. Next was "Fay's house". This was an underground house dug out by picks and chisels by 3 ladies. It was quite incredible. Our last stop was the very pretty Serbian church which again was underground.... Casey spent some time there confessing.. Overall a very weird but interesting town and Shannon didn't even buy any jewellery. I think the local weirdness is rubbing off on everyone... Anyway we hit the road again and had a very long afternoon drive to Port Augusta. As we write this blog there is this wet stuff falling heavily from the sky.💦💨💦💨. Might have to head north tomorrow..

Burty's useless fact: Would you believe that Coober Pedy golf club is the only club in the world to have reciprocal rights at The Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews....
