Diary for On the road again

Portland – North Conway/Mt. Washington

2013-09-28

Traveling on, we are now leaving the coast and head West into the White Mountains to North Conway, New Hampshire. From there we are doing the “must do” trip up to Mount Washington. With an elevation of 6’288 feet (1’917 meters) it is the highest point in the Northeast of the USA. The mountain is famous for its extreme weather conditions. As for instance, in 1934 in a storm, the strongest wind gusts ever were registered here (besides of Tornados) worldwide (!) with a speed of 231 miles (372 km). And the temperatures often drop down to arctic degrees. But different to Hedy and Peter’s first visit to the summit 3 years ago, when they were almost blown from the top and nearly froze to death, we enjoy bright sunshine at comfortable T-shirt temperatures and a beautiful view in all directions. But not only the mountain is impressing. To drive up and down the Mount Washington Auto Road is just as spectacular and already after the first couple of turns one can tell, which drivers normally use their cars only on Sundays to stroll along six-lane interstate highways. Especially the guests from Far East are at their limit with their rental cars and quite a few end up in the ditch and have to get pulled out by the omni-present road safety teams. For Peter, this is all peanuts and he maneuvers his big Chevy truck precisely like a Swiss watch just centimeters next to the precipice (and this without barriers on the road side!!!).

On the other side, Hedy and my pulse rises quite noticeable and we close our eyes  from time to time and instinctively lean inside to the centre of the car…
