Diary for On the road again

Lincoln NH - Burlington VT

2013-10-01

In the morning we receive a wakeup call from our friends, the goose family. Time for breakfast! Locking out from my bed up front through the driver’s window, I have a direct view of a little river happily splashing its way through the woods. Pure nature of the finest kind! After our breakfast-brunch, we start our longest shift up to now traveling from Lincoln to Burlington in Vermont at the shores of Lake Champlain, 180 km (110 miles to the West. As usual we experience beautiful landscapes, but the roads eventually need a little bit of a refit – road constructions for miles and traffic jams alternate with shaker-like bumpy roads (making the milk in my Fridge almost turn to whipped cream). Of course, I have to restore the interior of my little camper reaching our final destination of the day. But in a miraculous way, the driver and the vehicle survive the ordeal quite save and without grumbling. On the other hand we are rewarded for our torture with a visit en route at the factory headquarters of my favorite ice-cream makers, Ben & Jerry’s in Waterbury, Vermont. On a interesting tour through the factory, we get to know everything about the two founding fathers and how the ice-cream is made out of milk, whipped cream, liquid sugar and several natural flavor additives like caramel, all kinds of fruit, nuts etc. The result is what we all love so much, a wonderful licking experience! Ben and Jerry are two typical guys representing the roaring late sixties, who live after the motto “why should I do something, if it is not fun?” and found a small ice-cream manufactory in a converted old gas station in Burlington back in 1978. Their creed is to produce the best ice-cream under strict ecological principles and at the best possible working conditions for all employees. Very quickly, their products are known beyond the borders of Vermont all over the country and larger product sites are being build nationwide. After the ice-cream has conquered the whole world, the two friends sell the company to the Unilever group for well over 300 milion $ under the condition, that the principles set up at the beginning for the business management has to be respected also in the future. Of course, the final degustation can’t be left out and we have the privilege to taste a sample of a new mix, which is not even on the market yet – we hope, not for long anymore… In the evening we visit an Italian restaurant and enjoy a excellent Pizza served by Lexi, a very pretty waitress who, with her most charming smile could easily pass as the twin sister of Julia Roberts.
