First, a couple of words about our stage point Burlington, Vermont: The city was founded in 1763 and with about 42’000 inhabitants it’s the largest city of the State of Vermont. The city hosts a University and Colleges and therefore there are lots of restaurants, bistros and cozy bars. There is a very picturesque walking zone in the heart of the city with one boulevard café after the other. The city became rich with the trade of wood, since Lake Champlain served as perfect transport facility, especially after the Champlain-Canal was opened in 1823, which made it possible to log wood and ship goods all the way from New York City to Montreal and vice versa.
And for all fans of winter sports: Burlington is also the home of the Burton Snowboard company, one of the world’s leading producers of snowboards and equipment.
Today, we do a tour around Lake Champlain. It is the sixth largest fresh water lake within the USA and with a length of approx. 130 miles and a width of approx. 15 miles it covers about 800 square miles. On the other hand, it lays only about 90 feet above sea level. The Frenchman Samuel de Champlain discovered and explored the lake with its approx. 80 islands in the year 1609 and immediately annexed the territory for the French crown. It is said, that a sea-monster similar to the one in Loch Ness in Scotland is living in the lake, but unfortunately we can’t spot it during our roundtrip….
With the car-ferry, we transfer from Charlotte to Essex in the State of New York on the other side of the lake. We follow the shoreline up North. Not far from here in the Adirondack and Green Mountains are the villages of Lake Placid (host venue of the Winter Olympics in 1932 an 1980) as well as the scenic villages of North Pole and Santa’s Village. In Plattsburgh, an Air Force Base, as you can tell from the bomber planes exhibited in a park in the center of the city, we head east and after another short ferry-ride we get to South Hero on Grand Isle. We pass large farms and stately villas and over a dam we get back into the State of Vermont and then return to Burlington.
Zuerst noch ein paar Worte zu unserem Etappenort Burlington, Vermont: Die Stadt wurde 1763 gegründet und ist mit ca. 42‘000 Einwohnern die grösste Stadt des Staates Vermont. Sie ist Heimat einer bekannten Universität und von Colleges, daher gibt es unzählige Restaurants, Bistros und heimelige Bars. Sehr hübsch ist die Fussgängerzone im Zentrum, wo sich ein Boulevard-Cafe an das andere reiht. Reich geworden ist die Stadt durch den Holzhandel, wobei der Lake Champlain als idealer Transportweg galt, insbesondere, nachdem mit der Eröffnung des Champlain-Kanals im Jahre 1823 eine durchgehende Wasserstrasse zwischen New York City und Montreal erstellt wurde.
Und für die Wintersport-Fans: In Burlington ist auch der Hauptsitz und die Produktionsstätte von Burton Snowboards, einer der weltweit führenden Hersteller von Snowboards und Equipment.
Heute machen wir eine Rundfahrt um den Lake Champlain. Es ist der sechst-grösste Binnensee der USA und weist mit einer Länge von 200 km und einer Breite von 23 km eine Fläche von 1‘269 km2 auf. Dabei liegt er nur 30 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Der Franzose Samuel de Champlain entdeckte und erforschte den See mit seinen rund 80 Inseln im Jahre 1609 und annektierte das Gebiet sogleich für die französische Krone. Angeblich wohnt im See, ähnlich wie im Loch Ness in Schottland, ein Seeungeheuer. Dieses bekommen wir aber auf unserer Rundfahrt leider nicht zu sehen. Mit der Fähre setzen wir von Charlotte über ans andere Ufer nach Essex im Bundesstaat New York. Dem Seeufer entlang fahren wir nordwärts. Nicht weit von hier befinden sich in den Adirondack Mountains und Green Mountains bekannte Resort-Orte wie Lake Placid, Austragungsort der Winterolympiade 1932 und 1980, aber auch North Pole und Santa’s Village. In Plattsburgh, einer Airforce-Basis, wie die ausgestellten Bomber mitten im Stadtpark beweisen, drehen wir wieder ostwärts und nach einer weiteren kurzen Überfahrt per Fähre gelangen wir nach South Hero auf Grand Isle. Die Weiterfahrt führt uns vorbei an grossen Farmen und herrschaftlichen Villen und über einen Damm wieder in den Staat Vermont. Dann geht es zurück an unseren Ausgangspunkt in Burlington.
