Tonight it rained. Well nothing unusual, if not for the fact, that it is the first rain we experience since we started our trip 9 days ago! This can’t spoil our good mood. Since we have another long transfer on our schedule for today, we decide to travel on the highways for once and therefore take it real easy with sleep in and a sumptuous breakfast/brunch first before we hit the road. This gives me the opportunity to write a few notes and give you a beginners view of the life travelling with a camper:
Why would I do something crazy like that? Wouldn’t it be much more comfortable to travel from one place to another in the comfort of a rental car and just check in to one of the many motels en route in the afternoon or evening? At least, that’s what I thought before I started my first tour with Hedy and Peter 4 years ago. But someone with this in mind does not know anything about the incredible freedom and unbound awareness, “life on the road” has to offer. One travels from destination to destination, from one beautiful sight to the next attraction without the stress of unpacking or packing the suitcase all the time, without being bound to an exact route plan and most important, without any pressure of a fixed time schedule. Like a snail, one travels in a easy going way, but always has its own home equipped with all the necessities for life on hand. A quick pit stop to grab a cool drink? No problem, the fridge is well stocked and the drinks bought at the supermarket are much cheaper than purchasing them out of the hotel room minibar. In need to “hurry for little boys” quickly? The onboard toilet is right behind the wheelhouse. Tired? No problem! The next Wal-Mart with its huge parking lots is just around the corner and instead of an uncomfortable driver’s seat you can take your half hour power nap in your own cozy bed. And if you happen to sleep in too long, you are welcome at Wal-Mart to stay overnight on the premises and be the first in the morning to grab a fresh baked croissant for breakfast. Of course, you will find more space in a hotel room or a holiday apartment, but what else do you need other than a bed, a sofa with a club table, a kitchenette and of course a toilet and shower? And especially the incredible feeling of freedom and independence! Someone who has experienced this once, can well understand Hedy and Peter’s philosophy: “Don’t dream your live away, but live your dreams!“. Why not spend a week “on the road” with the two of them once? I can highly recommend it to all of you! So much for the fun life of a new born camper enthusiast!
OK, to make a long story short, today we take the fastest (highway-) route and drive on for another 130 miles in rainy weather to Sturbridge in Massachusetts. By the way, arriving at our destination, the sun is laughing for us again!
Heute Nacht hat es geregnet. Eigentlich nichts Ungewöhnliches. Aber es ist dies der erste Regen seit Beginn unserer Reise vor 9 Tagen! Dadurch erleidet unsere gute Stimmung aber keinerlei Abbruch. Da wir ohnehin eine weitere längere Etappe vor uns haben, beschliessen wir, uns für einmal auf den Highways zu verschieben und nehmen es daher am Morgen mit Ausschlafen und einem ausgiebigen Frühstück-Brunch sehr gemütlich. Bei dieser Gelegenheit vielleicht ein paar Eindrücke eines Laien aus dem Camper-Leben:
Warum tue ich mir das an? Wäre es nicht viel bequemer, mit einem Mietwagen von Ort zu Ort zu fahren und Mittags oder Abends einfach in einem der unzähligen Motels einzuchecken? So dachte ich wenigstens vor meiner ersten Tour mit Hedy und Peter vor 4 Jahren. Aber wer so denkt, kennt die unglaubliche Freiheit und Ungebundenheit, die einem das Leben „on the road“ bietet, nicht. Man reist von Ort zu Ort, von Sehenswürdigkeit zu Attraktion, ohne den Stress des Koffer Ein- und Auspackens, ohne genau vorgegebene Route und vor allem ohne Zeitdruck und fixem Fahrplan. Wie eine Schnecke geht man es zwar gemütlich an, hat aber sein Häuschen immer dabei und damit auch alles, was man sonst zum Leben braucht. Ein kleiner Pausenstop mit Lust auf eine kühle Erfrischung? Kein Problem, der Kühlschrank ist voll und der Inhalt vom Supermarkt kostet einen Bruchteil der Drinks aus der Hotel-Minibar. Eine kleine Auszeit weil man zwischendurch mal „für kleine Jungs“ muss? Die bordeigene Toilette ist direkt hinter dem Fahrerhaus. Müde? Kein Problem: das nächste Wal-Mart Shoppingcenter mit Riesenparkplatz liegt gleich um die Ecke und statt eines unbequemen Fahrersitzes nimmt man den halbstündigen Power-Nap im eigenen Körbchen! Und wenn man verschläft, darf man bei Wal-Mart auch mal auf dem Parkplatz gratis übernachten und bekommt dadurch am Morgen als erster gleich die frischesten Brötchen zum Frühstück. Natürlich ist das Platzangebot nicht zu vergleichen mit einem Motelzimmer oder gar einer Ferienwohnung, aber was braucht man mehr als ein grosses Bett, ein Sofa mit Clubtisch, eine Kitchinette und natürlich eigene Toilette und Douche? Und vor allem das unglaubliche Gefühl von Freiheit und Ungebundenheit! Wer das einmal erlebt hat, versteht Hedy und Peter’s Philosophie ganz genau: Träume nicht dein Leben, lebe deine Träume!“. Wie wär’s mal mit einer Woche „on the road“ mit den beiden? Ich kann es allen nur wärmstens empfehlen!
